The Marlowe Transmissions: Scavenger's War
It freaking blew my mind. It's an incredible post-Apocalyptic book that is fresh, original, surprising, engrossing and very, very well written. It would be a damn good movie. |

Redshirts is about crewmembers on a spaceship who wear red shirts, and always die whenever they go on a landing party... should be funny This is getting excellent reviews. I read the Old Man's War series and loved every bit of it. Once this comes out in paperback I'll be picking it up for sure. I just finished RedShirts. I won't spoil anything, but unfortunately I thought this was the worst Scalzi book I've read....not even close. And I've read all of his other books. RedShirts was severely disappointing to me. There...now that I've sufficiently stolen any expectation of a good read from you, maybe you might enjoy it a bit. I really did not. |

He's not in the one-book-a-year category for production, sadly. When you combine that with how much I enjoy his stuff, to hear that this one might be a stinker is a bummer cause it means I'm looking at another couple of years before he puts out something else. |

http://www.amazon.com/The-Emperors-Finest-Ciaphas-Cain/dp/1844168913 Commissar Cain is called to duty once more, saving a governor's daughter from a planet over-run by rebels. The uprising hides something far more sinister however - genestealer hybrids! The search for the source of the alien threat leads Cain to a drifting space hulk - a far safer place than beside the obsessed governor's daughter. But when the Reclamator Space Marines suffer devastating losses at the hands of the Great Devourer, Cain and his trusty aide Jurgen must go it alone. With the tyranids waking and a group of stowaway orks on the loose, there are no safe places to run or hide, and Cain must use all his ingenuity and cunning to escape the space hulk alive. |

My son just bought that one, so he gets to read it first. I just finished Bolo: Cold Steel and started Field of Dishonor (Honor Harrington book 4, I'm reading them in order). Next up is The Primarchs from the Horus Heresy series. |

Those of you who liked Jack Campbell's (John G. Hemry) "The Lost Fleet" series should pick up "Stark's War", "Stark's Command", and "Stark's Crusade". This is set in the near future and I believe it is also set in the same universe as "The Lost Fleet" series. I started on the first one last night around 9:00pm and finished the last one about 1:00pm today.

Every Single Officer above the rank of 'gopher' was incompetent, crooked, or both? I finished it, but.... I never picked up the next one. Too Much Disbelief to suspend, at least for me. Thank goodness there are lots of authors out there - this particular series was not my cuppa, but that doesn't mean it can't be yours. |

I've been reading a lot of the Free Baen stuff lately. Just E-mail it to my Kindle.
Browse around this site a bit: http://baencd.thefifthimperium.com/ (Go to the 'Browse' links... These are copies (Freely distributable per the license, as long as they don't charge, perfectly legal) of the CD's that are in the Baen hardcovers. The different CD's have different free E-books. There is a TON of good stuff) |

As stated, it's written by a bunch of different authors which does make it feel a bit uneven. My personal favorites so far (I'm only to book eight) are The Flight of the Eisenstien and Legion. Also, if you're looking to read into the 40k universe, get The Eisenhorn Omnibus. I'm reading through the first Gaunt's Ghosts omnibus right now. So far it's a load of fun. Dan Abnet is my favorite author |

The Hydrogen Sonata by Ian M. Banks.
Latest Culture universe novel from Banks. I am a huge fan, this book makes me happy. 2013 by Kim Stanley Robinson I read this recently and was pleasantly surprised. Edit: I read 'Redshirts' recently and was also disappointed as others have reported. |

Since I last posted on this thread I read:
Monster Hunter Legion - loved it. No complaints about Larry, as usual. He remains at the top of my I Don't Care What The Cover Has On It Or What The Book Is About, If He Wrote It Then I'm Going To Buy It list. Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld - YA retelling of the outbreak of the first World War in an alternate universe with Steampunk elements. Entertaining enough that I picked up the sequel. Soult Hunter by Aaron Dembski-Bowden - The first of a 40k trilogy focusing on the Night Lords chapter of the Chaos Space Marines. I was hesitant to pick it up as I wasn't feeling like a book written from a "bad guy's" perspective, and I was also worried that having a Chaos Marine as a main character might lessen the "holy shit, here come the Chaos Marines, we're fucked!" sense that the other books from the Black Library have protrayed. I gladly had no reason to fear. I'm putting this in my top 5 fun books I read this year. I'm gonna pick up the next two now, and I'm pumped to see Dembski-Bowden is slated to write the Horus Heresy book focusing on the World Eaters. The Stars My Destination by Alan Bester - I can see why this is considered a classic. Not the typical smasha-banga-booma stuff I gravitate toward, more of a thinker I'd say. This book had some really cool ideas that were well developed. The Christmas stocking had Leviathan Wakes, Ready Player One, and The Wise Man's Fear, so my pile of To Read just got that much bigger. |

I really loved "The Name of the Wind" and "The Wise Man's Fear". I just wish that Patrick Rothfuss would get on with writing the 3rd one. Vulcan94 |
