One or twice he would talk frankly about his cancer, and it was clear to me, though he'd never type it, that he was in pain at times and the cancer he had was very serious. For some reason, I think of Joshua Deets' epigraph in the novel Lonesome Dove. It was a fitting tribute for a Soldier and American. JOSH DEETS SERVED WITH ME 30 YEARS.
