I tried to make all the videos in a line, since it stacks them in some odd fucked up way, but I dont think that would cause an issue. |

Musicians have to be good, because the singing and lyrics are laughable.

I'll concede that it's not the easiest thing to listen to as an outsider, but metal vocals take some serious talent to actually be good at, and the quality and topic of lyrical content ranges vastly just as it does in any other genre. |

Exactly. I hear so many people jone on it as "just a bunch of yelling" but try and do it...it is insanely hard to do with volume, consistently for the length of a performance or recording, and SAFELY. Sure you might be able to belt out a song, but if you can't talk for the rest of the day, let alone crank out another one, then yeah you kinda can't do it. Same thing with the lyrics. There are several bands and subgenres that have very well thought out lyrics. But yeah, the average Beatles song lyrics are soooooo much less laughable (And I say that as a huge Beatles fan.) Uber-genius John Lennon I am he as you are he as you are me And we are all together See how they run like pigs from a gun See how they fly, I'm crying Sitting on a cornflake Waiting for the van to come Corporation T-shirt, stupid bloody Tuesday Man you've been a naughty boy You let your face grow long I am the eggman They are the eggmen I am the walrus Goo goo g' joob Mr. City policeman sitting Pretty little policemen in a row See how they fly like Lucy in the sky See how they run, I'm crying I'm crying, I'm crying, I'm crying Yellow matter custard Dripping from a dead dog's eye Crabalocker fishwife Pornographic priestess Boy, you've been a naughty girl You let your knickers down I am the eggman They are the eggmen I am the walrus Goo goo g' joob Sitting in an English garden Waiting for the sun If the sun don't come you get a tan From standing in the English rain I am the eggman They are the eggmen I am the walrus Goo goo g' joob G-goo goo g' joob Expert, texpert choking smokers Don't you think the joker laughs at you? (Ha ha ha! He he he! Ha ha ha!) See how they smile like pigs in a sty See how they snide, I'm crying Semolina pilchard climbing up the Eiffel tower Elementary penguin singing Hare Krishna Man, you should have seen them kicking Edgar Allan Poe I am the eggman They are the eggmen I am the walrus Goo goo g' joob G-goo goo g' joob Goo goo g' goo G-goo goo g' joob goo Juba juba juba Juba juba juba Juba juba, juba juba Juba juba Read more: Beatles - I Am The Walrus Lyrics | MetroLyrics |

I am not saying it's easy. I just think it sounds dumb as shit, and I played in a metal band in high school (6-7 years ago.) I am at the point now where I love metal for the insane musical skills in it, and I just can't listen to some kid scream his head off like job for a cowboy. It sounds ridiculous. I like my vocals more like dream theater or old nightwish, even children of Bodom I like. Screaming can work, but it's gotta be tension and release, like opeth, all that remains, KSE, BFMV, etc. |

Different strokes for different folks I guess. With the exception of Opeth (Simply because I've never listened to them) I'm not much a fan of any of them with the exception of a few songs here and there. |

I can't say metal drummers suck, they are usually the most talented member in any given metal band but metal is the musical equivalent to sticking your head under a zero turn lawn mower.

The drumming of Marshall Wieczorek from Wretched has always caught my ear pretty well. Their new album is fucking sick. Any reason behind the tape on the bottom of the cymbals? I understand using shit to dampen the tone of drums when recording, but I've never see anything like that on cymbals http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPSyzdJwV8g View Quote He probably just wants immediate decay instead of the cymbals rininging out a lot. I put a moongel on my ride for that reason. Wouldn't feel the need to do it on anything else. His cymbals are pretty much nonexistent in that mix IMO. |

Seems odd to want so many of your cymbals to decay that quickly, but different strokes for different folks. I guess it probably helps clear up a bit of noise in the higher frequencies |

Too many bands are all speed and don't seem to have a clue about balls and chunk (groove) except for a few seconds of "breakdown" per song. As for Kollias, he was a huge inspiration for me on double bass, but everything he does (in Nile at least) is extremely basic drumming just played really fast. Then there is the other extreme, players who are super technical but at the expense of any kind of punch and groove at all. This guy Wieczorek (and the band as a whole) manage to do it all really well. |

Chris Adler, while not having the flair of some of the more flamboyant drummers, really knows exactly what is needed for each song. And nobody can throw in a fill like Adler. He's one of my favorites.
|
|
And then for technical prowess, I've always found the drummers for the complex math metal bands to be mind boggling. I can't even count out what they're playing, and there they are firing on all cylinders.
Matt Garstka is a great example. Check out his work with Animals as Leaders. |

How the fuck could I forget Danny Carey? One of my all-time favorite bands and drummer. I consider TOOL to be progressive metal, but I know some people see it differently, but none-the-less it's going into this thread. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sid2RzuswiY View Quote As a classically trained drummer of 15 years, they all have impressive speed, but none of the impress me. Danny Carey doesn't have the chops some of these guys have, but Danny impresses me. There are very few drummers that make me go back to re-listen to what he just played to try and figure it out. |

It doesnt really have set meaning for drummers, it just usually ends up being something one says to make it appear that you are elite before you crap on what someone else does. |

Could mean he was trained as a symphonic percusionist. Or... maybe he has studied with such notable percussion instructors as: Gary Chaffee, Gary Chester, Ed Uribe, Ed Kaspik, and John Ramsey. Or it could be what you said. |
