While I would love to have a YJM or an AFD, I wouldn't trade either one for my JVM, because it's a lot more versatile.

The JVM is definitely a very versatile amplifier.

None of the above. I'd have David Bray make a modded, high gain, channel switching 50 watt Plexi type amp for me, instead.
Marshall's multi-channel amps are not setting track records for reliability. Anything BUT that, actually. Keeping the amp simple is really the way to go if you want an amp that just works every night. The simpler circuits also (usually) sound better. |

Valvestate?
There's no better way to get your tone lost in the mix than to plug into a Valvestate. I've never yet played onethat I'd find satisfactory even for practicing in the bedroom. I gotta have glowing glass. Lots of gain, generated from within those little glass bottles and not from some stompbox, too. CJ |

I did some searching & the only complaints I could find about the JVM were from people who don't even own one, and an issue with the heater fuses in JVMs made prior to the 25th week of 2007, which Marshall addressed & corrected.
And if things go well with the band I got invited to join, I'll be putting mine to the test. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

YJM no question!
But I've always been an Yngwie guy and I dig the 1959SLP vibe of that amp. I could care less about the stupid on-board DOD overdrive. As far as Marshall amps not getting it done anymore... I used to think that same thing. My last three amps were boutique amps that were pretty awesome (Bogner XTC, Bogner Shiva, and VHT Pittbull UL). But I plugged into a bone-stock, new reissue JCM800 2203X last week and it blew me away. The thing had HUGE tone and was just a friggin BEAST. If the dealer didn't have it priced so high (c'mon –– $2350 for a single channel head???) I would have likely walked out of there with that beast. MASSIVE tone... |

I'm 40, and I think that the JCM800 will go down as my generations Plexi. Just an epic amp. To think I could have had them for well under $1000 back in the day. |

Well, Ive been playing my JVM at band practice twice a week for about 6 weeks. So far so good. Practice is going through the set, working on new stuff, and going through the set again. It usually lasts at least 2 hours.

Don't over look the JCM 900 gets a bad rap but sounds really good. Came out in the 90's to address the 80's sound that everyone was looking for.

Yeah, people dog on the 900s because they have a PCB, but screw it, they still sound good. |

I got a JCM900 4100 model off CL for $250! I thought it sounded like crap so I lent to a more experienced Marshall amp guy to demo. He was blown away. He gave me some settings to try and other hints (like looping the effects loop) and she growled to life. I've since retubed it with JJ's and it's a beast. I do have a VS65R valvestate amp that sounds pretty good as well. Don't use it much anymore but low prices I see for these on CL makes me think I might as well hang onto it. |

CJ If you over-scooped the mids...yep it'd get buried quick. I had the 8200 stereo and it was loud and clear.....all on how you set your tone and what you run with it. |

It just didn't have a voice that cuts through no matter how you set it. I think it was the speakers as much as it was the amp itself. Regardless, no valvestate is on my shopping list, and never will be. I gotta have the bottles and the iron. |

My JCM900 is the #4500 Hi Gain Dual Reverb 50watt head and she growls alright! Sometimes I run a ADA MP1 through her for more 80's metal, but for blues I put a Tube screamer in front of her. ![]() |

Well, the heater fuses in my JVM went the other day. I was expecting it though, since it is an early JVM and the early ones had problems with the heater fuses. And it gives me an excuse to go ahead and get some mods done that I've been wanting.
So in the meantime I'm using my JCM 2000 TSL. I forgot how good it sounds. The clean channel isn't quite as good as the JVM's, but the crunch and lead channels sound awesome. |
