Wasn't sure what forum to post this, so if this is the wrong forum, please let me know.

I'm trying to find a good pair of noise cancelling headphones to enable me to study as well as work from home. I had a $125 credit at the Apple Store so I bought the Bose QC15 noise cancelling headphones (http://www.bose.com/controller?url=/promotions/entry_pages/qc15/qc_15.jsp&perfsourceid=K9677&src=K9677. They do cancel some noise, but not that much unless I'm playing music. I'm thinking about just returning them. I like that it works with my iPhone, and probably can connect it to my laptop and use it with my work IP phone.

My $10 range shooting protection work 10x better than these for blocking background noise.

I'm looking for headphones that will cancel out background noise without the need to play music as I find it distracting when I'm studying or concentrating. It would be nice if they allowed for playing music, using the phone, etc and had a good noise canceling mic.

Anybody have a better suggestion?

I have the same Bose and find them to work well , my wife says they block out my snoring and she wants her own.
I did try a pair of Sony but they ended up being returned.

You have to understand how noise canceling headphones work, and what they're intended for.

They are best at canceling low frequency noise from aircraft engines, etc. They will not work as well on the random, higher-pitched sounds typically encountered in daily life.

It has to do with the wavelength of the noise you are trying to cancel.

You are better off with the cheaper, simpler solution of using your shooting range hearing protection.

I ended up buying the Bose headphones. They cancel some noise by them selves, a little bit more when you turn them on. But the work extremely well when I connect them to a music/sound source like my phone or PC.

The person who sits next to me at work talks all the time and eats at her desk like a pig several times per day. Always loud food - Carrots, apples, pretzels, etc. She chews with her mouth open and talks with her mouth full.

Will the Bose QC-15 headphones help? I'm willing to spend the money on this. It's a serious issue.

She's driving me up the wall. We don't have much space or any walls between us. In fact we share a desk.

UPDATE Thursday morning, 5/10 - She got in a minor car accident on the way home from work yesterday. We'll be hearing about it all day.

If you plug it into a music/sound source it'll cut out most of the noise, although you might here some droning in the background. If you put the volume up, it really blocks things out. If I'm jamming at work, my cube neighbors have to walk into my cube to get my attention... or ping me on the chat..

I went to a Fry's about a month ago and tried the QC15 phones. I bought them on the spot and have no regrets.

They cancel ambient noise well even without a sound source and play music better than any phones I've had before.

The beast has been silenced. She'll be played by Scarlett Johansen in the movie about our company.

When I read your post, it made me think of this scene from Office Space http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0N05WL2NlLo

We had our "Nina" on my floor, but she was thankfully moved to a walled office. She drove us all nuts.

The noise level in the room has been kicked up a notch. In addition to Eats All The Time And Talks Like A Crow, we have just hired an intern who is a Computer Science student at a nearby university (the same one where I got my BA in Psychology 1980.) FNG is 20 years old and has a decent sense of humor, but he has stereotype nerdy social skills and eats frequently as well - Sticks of horrid red and purple licorice, which he gobbles and chews with his mouth open.

The Bose headphones and Bach Brandenburg Concertos are saving my life right now. If only I could get something to make the smell of that licorice go away.

The only noise I would want Bose headphone's to cancel would be the sound the Bose headphones were producing. I hate how Bose products sound.

You can buy OSHA approved headphones. They're not necessairly noise cancelling though, they're just earpro with speakers inside.

I think about buying those bose headphones every other month, I just end up spending the money somewhere else each time. Maybe one day....
