PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten -- A New Zealand tourist has been killed by the blast from a jetliner taking off at a seaside airport in the Dutch Caribbean territory of St. Maarten, officials said Thursday.
The 57-year-old woman was knocked into a wall as she tried to cling to a fence to feel the blast on Wednesday, police spokesman Ricardo Henson said by phone. He said the woman was taken to the hospital, where she was declared dead. Her name wasn't released. Rolando Brison, director of tourism for the island of St. Maarten, told the New Zealand Herald that he spoke to the victim's family. "Yes, the family did confirm that (she was a New Zealander) to me," he said. "And we're so sad to hear that. At this time I only wish to express my deepest sympathy to the family and loved ones while we continue to investigate what transpired just hours ago." |

My Maho Beach photo album seems to fall within the new BOTD rules. Hmmm. If I get too bored, I may add a few someday:)
As for fence clinging, my experience is that it's not too hard to hold on regardless of aircraft type. The Insel Air DC-9 pilots seem to like to stand on the brakes for a LONG time. Perhaps for a show. If you get some fumes or sand in your eyes well, one must tough it out for the duration. Letting go could be bad and considering the number of people down there, the law of averages found an equilibrium. Quote HistoryQuoted:
