Here's a film documenting an air show/air power demonstration at Eglin AFB. Too much cool stuff in it to describe, but it includes strafing runs with cannon, napalm, Mighty Mouse FFAR rockets, a toss-bombing B-47 with a simulated nuke airburst detonation, an F-100 going Mach 1 at low altitude, and a B-36 dropping a whole load of bombs.  The title at YouTube describes the film as dating from the '60s, but that is incorrect. It would have had to have been filmed between 1956 (when the T-Birds started using the F-100C) and 1958 (when the B-36 was retired from service).

Today you're lucky if a string of hefty bags filled with gasoline is detonated at an airshow...

1956 or '57. F-102 has a short tail, and around 1958 SAC stopped doing LABS with the B-47.

Yep.  That maneuver tore those B-47's up.  Hard on wings and wing boxes.

We really have turned into a litigious bunch of pussies as Americans. I would love to see airshows like that again . Hell its hard just to find an airshow anymore since the 90s they have mostly gone away I believe due to too much insurance costs.

That was not a typical 'Airshow" that your average civilian is used to. It's a USAF air power demonstration, which only brass and special invited civilian guests are invited to.

If I'm not mistaken the AF still puts on a Demo a few times a year at the Nellis ranges. Live ordnance expended in front of a live audience. But you still have to have a special invitation.

Yes, it's called "capstone" and is part of the GO "training" syllabus.

There's a distinct lack of carpet bombing at the local muni airshows.  I feel like I've been robbed.
