Block 60 F-16's would be hot.

This makes far too much sense for them to actually do it.

I've been saying for a long time to just buy some F15SE's if not just regular F15s. 16s wouldn't be bad either.

The Air Force operating Rhinos.

That'll be the day.

Oh heck just go back to the Phantom and be done with it.  Heck of a lot cheaper and with today's ECM plenty safe from ground threats.  After all there isn't really any serious air to air threat these days.

Think about it, when was the last time there was any significant air to air combat?  And, the ole Phantom could carry a ton of ordnance.

F-15s with AESA radar and plenty of power. Look into adding canards and thrust vectoring nozzles.

We need new 15E's. They have zero replacement on the books, and are very useful.

The F-35 is vaporware. The F-15, F-16, F-18 purchases would replace all those aged airframes at a fraction of the cost of the F-35 pipe dream.

The Army can barely handle the fixed wing it's got.

Personally, I'd say double the size of the AFRes and ANG.

There is a lot of extras $$$ figured into the price of FMS aircraft.  The USAF price would be cheaper.

Given that the current plan is to keep the F-15C's until 2040 or so; I think that a purchase of something along the lines of the current Saudi buy of F-15SA's wouldn't be a terrible idea. I doubt the C airframes can last that long in the numbers envisioned.

Block 60 F-16's would also be nice, but not nice enough for a small-ish buy... I'd rather upgrade existing F-16's with the money if you're going to throw it at that fleet.

F/A-18E/F's... only if considering a purchase for the ANG. They'd be useful for the air-policing mission, and there are a good number of USN/USMC peeps in the ANG that would be familiar with the platform. But not for use by the active duty USAF.

Ultimately, though, unless this is an industrial play - keep a second fighter line open - we're better off sucking it up and buying the F-35's. They'll be cheaper in the long run, though that long run is probably 20 years out.

Multirole/multipurpose F15SEs and Superbug F18s (F15 is not, to my knowledge, carrier operational) would be an excellent move.

Block 60s and Super Bugs would be damn good for the USAF. The Super Bug would also be cross service compatible. Yeah, increasing the size of the AFRES and the ANG would be angood thing too.

https://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/usaf-denies-seeking-more-f-16-or-f-15-combat-jets-419473/

The US Air Force has denied any plans to purchase another tranche of Lockheed Martin F-16 or Boeing F-15 combat jets following reports it could seek bids for up to 72 new aircraft.

According to comments attributed to a senior US Air Combat Command official at an international fighter conference in London last week, the current Lockheed F-35 procurement plan could prove unaffordable, and another fighter wing of F-15s, F-16s or perhaps even F/A-18s is being considered to supplement the current fleet – which will serve into the 2040s as F-35s are delivered.
