Theoretical question (and no doubt a few here who have done it.)

What is the minimum GA aircraft you would want to fly you and your family from CA to Hawaii?

How would one go about planning the trip?

Citation X.        Top off the gas, check the winds aloft and go.

20 years ago or so there was a guy who flew to Oshkosh from Hawaii and back a few times is his homebuilt Long-EZ. And this was before GPS was widely in use.

A Cirrus will get you most of the way there.

Only reason he didn't get all the way was a mechanical fault with his ferry fuel system.

Challenger 601 or Falcon 50/900

Gulfstream 250, Hawker 900.

I've done it a few times in a Lear 36, but would rather go in something with a little bigger cabin.

Falcon 50 would be ok.

Fltplan.com would get you there, the winds are quite accurate.  At least in the flight levels.

I've done in it in 737, 757, and L-1011.

I would do it in RA-4000 or similar (although RA-4000 is totes the swagger wagon).

I'd do it in a Hawker 900XP as mentioned.

Hell, with the right winds an 800XP will make it.

As for planning?  Universal XD

The only airplane that I have flown to Hickalulu was the venerable, manly, sleek and sexy KC-97L. We would only go in the summer time when the westerly winds were light.
The last trip I made we lost  #2 recip about an hour after take off coming back home. We turned around and went back to Hickalulu and I was "forced" to stay there with pay for an extra week while an engine was flown from  stateside.

G4 even though a G3 will do it no problem.

Planning, easy, I would use our dispatcher.

That would be a G280.  250 is bad juju for the chinese so GAC renamed it 280 a while back.

Thought I only plan 757s over there.  Nothing GA for me.

The guys in the the hangar next door to us have done it in a Falcon 50.

So that's my choice if I win the big lotto.

Just got back from Hawaii (Oahu and the Big Island) but sadly flew there and back in a 767.

My back was sore for days after we returned due to the shitty coach seats on the way home.

The 767 is a fine aircraft but these two we flew on had seen better days. Must have been the two oldest
767s in the AA fleet.

I really enjoyed Hawaii

I've done it several dozen times, in both the B747-100/200 (as flight engineer) series and the B757-300 (as Captain).

Remember in the two engine airplanes ETOPS= Engines turn or people swim...

I did it in a Caravan and several DHC-6. We called them flying bombs. Entire cabin filled with aluminum tanks with hand transfer valves. All were way over gross on takeoff.

Yep, but now Captain Dave "retired", never was a "Delta   Captain". Went out on a medical in 2007 at age 48, took six years to get my 2th Class back. Now flying ISR in the Sandbox and corporate contract work.

It depended upon headwinds. 20 was our goal, but 22 seemed to be our average.

Made the trip several times GII and GIII. Takes about 5 hours out and 4.5 back (Oakland (or from Lake Havasu for cheaper fuel) to Oahu).  If the winds are good you can make it to Houston in the GIII.  Easy to plan and fly just using fltplan.com

I'm comfortable in anything that has between 6 and 12 flight attendants.
