Just heard an F-18, possibly from VMFA-251 and N917NA land back to back at Dulles.

Anybody know of some sort of event they'd be involved with?  Doesn't seem to be anything happening at the Udvar-Havy this weekend.

Maybe part of a flyover for the Army-Navy game?

Pretty sure NASA operates Hornets as chase planes.

NASA has a handful of Hornets, most of them are at Edwards I think.  They do use them for chase.  Not sure if they are doing any more special projects with them.

Probably just a coincidence they landed back to back.

I don't think the F-18 was NASA.  It wasn't using a NASA callsign.  It sounded like Volt/Bolt01.  VMFA-251 uses the callsign TBolt.  It landed before the T-38.

01 would signify the CO.

Could be what's known as a cross-country training. Our pilots would have to fly to distant airports and stay overnight due to time on duty restrictions.

01 was probably the call sign on the schedule.  Likely both were on a cross country.

Don't know if it matters but Army-Navy game is tomorrow in Baltimore.

01 is typically used by commanding officers.  Had it been a NASA jet the F-18 would've IDed as either NASA### or the more rare PLUTO## which I only heard during the shuttle transfers a few years back.   81/91 are typical for x-country.

NASA917 came from Huntsville.

I bet they're doing the flyover tomorrow.  The Blue Angels aren't doing it like in the past.  The Army's got CH-47s and AH-64s for the flyover.

Of the eight squadrons I've been in I can't ever recall the CO using 01.  I understand the protocol, but it seems we use what ops writes on the schedule.  Maybe it is a hornet thing.  As a sched writer I can't remember ever writing it specifically that way either.  Doesn't mean it that is always the case.

917 I am guessing is on a cross country.

when I was on active duty (77-87), 00 was the CO's bird when the whole squadron flew, but it could be assigned to any pilot to fill the schedule on a day-to-day basis.
