I sometimes think they should stop flying them just to prevent this, but then gain, that's not right, either.

I guess/hope the Gal can be rebuilt.

There are companies building brand new ones around old data plates. No need to ground them to preserve them, and free people should be allowed to use their private property as they see fit.

Still a terrible loss of life.

Had the incredible opportunity to go visit the museum in August and met the crew down there.   Top notch guys and gals with maintenance and preservation as their number one goal.    Deeply saddened by this as I knew the pilot just briefly (did some gun stuff for him awhile back).   Top rate chap and good man.

Also glad to report that my good friend and fellow ARFCOMer was not piloting her.    He was going down tomorrow for the airshow.

A few pics from the August visit.

Reports saying, no calls of distress, no radio contact at all, just a plummet to the sea.

Agree, a loss of a great pilot, and a man who was probablly living his dream of a mustang ride. Just awful.

Any controls in the back?
Not that it would matter
with a non pilot.

My dad took a ride in that thing 3 months ago.  One of the first things the pilot told my dad was if they have to bail he wasn't waiting on him.   Canopy would come off and to stand up and it would suck you out.   Different pilot though he was from Kentucky.

The Pilot  — Leo Hymas

Someday we will know, where the pilots go
When their work on earth is through.
Where the air is clean, and the engines gleam,
And the skies are always blue.
They have flown alone, with the engine's moan,
As they sweat the great beyond,
And they take delight, at the awesome sight
of the world spread far and yon.

Yet not alone, for above the moan, when the earth is
out of sight,
As they make their stand, He takes their hand,
and guides them through the night.
How near to God are these men of sod,
Who step near death's last door?
Oh, these men are real, not made of steel,
But He knows who goes before,

And how they live, and love and are beloved,
But their love is most for air.
And with death about, they will still fly out,
And leave their troubles there.
He knows these things, of men with wings,
And He knows they are surely true.
And He will give a hand, to such a man
'Cause He's a pilot too.

I cannot imagine the manuvering on these demo rides are very violent. It could have simply been a control surface failure or even engine failure below safe bailout altitude.

Depends on what you ask for.  I just did a flight not too long ago in Crazy Horse and they will take it up to 5-6Gs if I remember right.  You tell them before you go up how aerobatic you want it to be.

I saw the wreckage a few days ago after it was recovered. Except for the right wing, the plane was shredded into small unrecognizable pieces. Had to have been going really fast when it hit to do that kind of damage.

Having flown one from the back seat, yep, there are controls in the back ...

... I don't remember being able to drop the gear if you had to.

Some do, some don't. Some tmore than others.

The one I flew in could be flown from the backseat, but only basic flying. Stick, rudder, engine controls, airspeed altimeter.
