Not the best environment to store aircraft with the salt and moisture.
Used to ride Mackey Airlines out of FLL to the Bahamas. Rode Convair 440's. Always a ground person on the fire extinguisher for start up. Neat times.

Great pics. One of those guys in the article is a (reformed) notorious smuggler of Iran-contra fame.

I'd love to fly an old prop liner (epically a Martin 4-0-4, since my dad used to fly one) around the pattern, on a nice weather day. But no way in hell would I want earn a living in one. Now, an Electra or Convair 580 might be a different story.

For some reason, my browser was only able to navigate to this part of the site:

I've been seeing a lot of Convairs around Sky Harbor (PHX) lately. Someone is still flying them...

Great airplane till you take a FNG to show him how to do an engine run, and he dumps a fire bottle because he's never seen a radial start.

My dad is pretty good friends with an old guy that owned a freight op in the 60s/70s, he owned three Beech 18's and two DC3's and has something like 12,000+ hours of twin radial time. Fascinating guy to talk to.

They only did express overnight delivers in the midwest, he still has a framed ad they had made and it says "XYZ Frieght Airline, A Fly By Night Operation"
The guys working on my neighbors roof keep calling me a paranoid weirdo in Morse code.
