You should drop into the field on the other side of the pass. Driggs Idaho! Awesome FBO...great food...awesome aviation museum. Owner of the FBO has a T2B, Mig15, Mig17 and a bunch of other toys on display.
Nuke the site from orbit - its the only way to be sure...

I just like flying low in my helicopter. I think the highest I have been in the 58 was 2500ft AGL, once. Most of the time I am 500ft or below

I don't blame you, if I flew helicopters I would have a difficult time getting more than a couple of feet agl, just incase that big spinning thing quit spinning.

I'd actually rather have altitude in an engine failure with a helicopter, but my operations, short of long cross countries, don't require me climbing very high. Unless its a 10' hover auto, which is super easy. :)

Frank, read up on height-velocity diagrams for helicopters and the principles of an autorotation to understand why altitude is a good thing in most situations.

But low level autos start in the flare. Should be easier.

Still, if you were over a few thousand feet up, wouldn't you just end up dropping like a rock?

No. As long as the rotor is spinning at minimum Nr, I'm in an auto. A long auto.

What would keep the rotor spinning with a total power loss though? The original inertia?

The rotor system basically reverses airflow and instead of inducing air through the rotor it uses the air from below to maintain rotor rpm. The helicopter generally maintains 100%Nr when the collective is fully reduced. However, some aircraft require more work to auto, like mine.

Very interesting, I won't feel as unsafe around helicopters now.
