THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT Background: I'm at NAS Pensacola for the sole purpose of visiting the Naval Aviation Museum and watching the Blue Angels practice (not full show) the next day. Let me get right to it. About 30min before takeoff where do you think this Travelynx was at one point?
Not sure? Questioning the potential trick questioness of the statement? I don't blame you lol :D So here is where he was at one point (bus was full). Not entirely sure what was going thru his mind
I can only guess it was his VERY FIRST time delivering people right onto the airstrip.
If you've guessed correctly yet still doubt how it could be possible ......... you are in fact, correct. The coach is returning from almost reaching the threshold of Runway 25L. . |

My first thought was using the bus to define the airshow box.

So can one just randomly drive onto a US Military base and go where they please? I can't even get into the gates of our bases here unless I have been specifically invited and have an escort or there is an air show on, even then I can't just drive all over the place.

I was thinking someone made a boo-boo, didn't provide an escort and he subsequently got lost. There were other large vehicles that came in to where he was when I took the close-in photo and they took the same route, the tow lane, which is where I was standing with some other photogs. edit: It may be slightly different at NAS Pcola due to the civilian Naval Aviation Museum being within the base. All I had to show was ID (my DL in my case) to get on base, though they didn't allow me to get on before a certain time* ......... so I went to the other gate at the other end of the base and got in
* I didn't know at that moment that I was an hour early, apparently Pcola is on Central time lol |

There are a few bases open to the public (at least partially). The Air Force Academy, NAS Pensacola, and Wright-Patterson AFB come to mind. They usually have museums or tourist attractions on the open part of the base.

Plan ahead. WAY ahead. |

I was stationed at Pensacola for a while during OCS (back when OCS was still there) and flight training. I believe that if you go outside certain areas, (if they see you) the base police will stop you if your vehicle doesn't have a DoD sticker or pass. The last time I visited there was in 2010 and I remember seeing signs to that effect around.
The western tip of the Florida panhandle is far enough west to be in Central Time. I had to go to a training course at Hurlburt. They have some cool stuff there, but the roads on the base are very strangely laid out. ![]() |
