So gorgeous!  I love whirly-birds but don't have the funds to finish the rating yet.  Even though I've applied to Bell multiple times as a mechanic.  I think building those birds would be a pretty good job.

These photos pre-date owning a digital camera...
Cramped quarters inside..
Inside view flying the SR9E

just fueled

Flying over Texas, headed to Austin

Local Fly-in

I have a fair number of pics from doing the resto.
It started out as 3 trailer loads of parts and certainly not airworthy.
Notice in the last photo pair how wide the gear is squatting on the ground compared to 'unloaded' in the air.

Nice looking bird.  Did you do all the fabric work yourself?

I think every pilot shroud have to dope and fabric at least one aircraft just to have respect for the work that went into the old ones.

I almost died in a Hawker crash.  At the time I was 1 of 2 people who would fuel jets at an FBO at HOU.  Some of the guys were going up to train a guy in the Hawker.  They asked me if I wanted an hour or so for my log book.  At the time I was 18, and I was like hell yeah i want some jet time.  I took a look at the board and 2 Lears were arriving for fuel at the same time while I would have been away.  If it was just 1 Lear the other guy coulda handled it by himself......however, because it was 2 I had to decline the offer and help.  I fueled them, they took off, flew toward beaumont texas....crashed.  They said it was a flat spin.  3 killed, I would have been #4 if it were not for devine intervention.

Yep, 1947 Seabee.
I've got about 150 hours in them.  I took my checkride on the Missouri river with a guy that was 72 years old.  Easiest checkride I have ever taken.  We started it up did 3 approaches over the river, landed once and headed back to the airport.  He asked me 3 questions about the airplane and we spent the rest of the time bullshitting about politics.   I have flown one from Miami to central Illinois and another one from Illinois to Seattle.  So I have flown coast to coast in one.

Not the fastest ship in the air and it flys like a bathtub, but in the water it is more fun than a monkey knife fight.  It's a great way to pick up the womenz too.

We stopped for fuel out by Lake Coeur d'Alene ID.  We we hungry so we called a lakeside restaurant from the FBO.  When we flew over to pick up our food we couldn't dock there, so they delivered our cheeseburgers to us in a dingy.

Here is a ton of info on that machine:  It has an engine STC and 2 extra feet on each wing.  The ones with the origional Franklin engines can barely get out of their own way.
http://www.seabee.info/rc3_987.htm

Here is one up on step.  This one has a Corvette engine in it:

There are also multi-engine versions called the Twin Bee:

The old Seabee has a reversible propeller for backing up on the water.

If I do a confined area landing and utilize the reverser once I hit the water I can get it stopped in about 500 feet.  It is super cool.  It's one of those aircraft where if you aren't careful you can land someplace you can't get back out of.

Yeah it was quite a bit faster. The CG was aft a bit as well and I had to keep the cyclic a bit further forward while hovering. When I touched down on the pad I didn't even feel the skids touching down (even though it's not perfectly centered on the G) though I don't know if that was because of the lighter weight.

ETA: Oh yeah, they didn't cut my shirt either, but that's probably because we wear flight suits.

I stopped cutting the shirt unless the student really wants it. I think it is corny and they are a pain in the ass to write on. I  like just taking a picture instead.

Which model R22 (beta, beta II) and what is your elevation out there?

Link Posted: 7/30/2010 3:18:01 PM EDT

It's a beta II and our field elevation is 5045.

Glad to see others using Boeing's foot rest.  That ledge is perfectly placed.    Does the 75's 76's flaps only go to 30?  Or is the speed beyond 30 just the same, and no reason for it on the placard?

Edit -
Link Posted: 8/7/2010 8:56:15 PM EDT

That isn't a 75.  And yes, they only go to 30.

And that footrest has been on Boeings since the B-17, IIRC.

Those seats need to slide back a little farther to get comfortable, I must say, but Boeing knows how to build em...

The plane's a 767-400 (it says it right on the flap speed placard.. )
