THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT What is a good one I can get for her? I know Xikar is supposed to be the best you can buy, but are there any other options available for a punch besides a Xikar? She won't smoke her higher priced cigars until she has something to punch them without damaging them.....which I understand. I will be ordering a new cutter myself and thought I would tack on a punch for her. Just pretty clueless about them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

I used to get bullet punches at JR Cigar that had replaceable cutters. It was easy to replace and the old one, with a little work with a dremel could be sharp again.

IMO, in terms of actual function, there are no good cigar punches. Some may be fancy in the materials used, or their quality of construction, but they all fail in the same way.
My only advice is to tell her to buy cheap punches, and toss them frequently so they stay sharp, and to rotate the punch more between her fingers and use less pressure. This will let it slice the tobacco more than crushing/pushing it into the cigar, and not tear the wrapper leaf as much. I and my father use the V-profile cutters too. Much cleaner. |

I've had a Xikar 007 for over a year & it's great. I keep it on my keychain, so I never leave home without it.

Make your own, for free.
I meant to post a thread about this but haven't gotten around to it.
Take some used brass (clean it, obviously) and use a debur/chamfer tool on it to make a nice edge and away you go...
Small punch? 223, medium? 308, big bastard? 45acp, so on and so forth with various calibers.
If you don't have any or don't reload (and thus do not have brass prep tools) pm me and I'll mail you a few.

Take a bit of fine wet/dry sand paper and tune up the edge on your punch cutter dosnt take much...After you follow the outer bevel with a couple of strokes, then roll a small piece "into a tube" and insert inside the cutter ring give a couple of twists.
I'm pretty much OCD when it comes to making/keeping things vorpal sharp |

Get her a V cutter and see if she likes that better. Punches just don't cut it...

Well, if you're a shooter -like most on this board are- you could do what I did when I was gifted this 54Ga cigar, make a field-expediant punch with a 556 brass .Just file the tip with a fine jewelers file and you're good to go.
I've never bought a punch because I prefer the cut method. ETA: hey Brandon, great minds think alike! |

I actually ended up getting a V cutter from the local B&M. It's something me and my G/F both like. She was the puncher and I was the cutter. The V cut is kind of like a mix of the two. Liking it very much so far.
Thanks for all your suggestions guy. |

It usually cuts enough to get a good draw, but it keeps the wrapper from peeling and bits from getting in your mouth. Sometimes tight rolls still need a guillotine. |

Local Cigar shop owner suggested the V cutter to me last time I was in. Really liking it so far.

You can get a little adventurous with the V, and cut it like a philips head (+), or do two off center cuts in the same direction so it looks like an equals sign ( = ), if you want a greater draw. |

I really like the punch, picked up two cheap from CigarBid (Green ones). If I don't have anything then I just peel the cap off with my tongue and teeth. It takes all of a couple seconds.
