Research says it's possible to identify Alzheimer's earlier

By CHRIS SWINGLE

Pamela Yates of Wyoming, N.Y., is rooting for continued discoveries that lead to successful treatment.

Her husband, Brock Yates, 76, former executive editor of Car and Driver magazine and a commentator on racing and vintage cars, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

"Hope is the ultimate medication, believe me," Pamela Yates said.

She lost a son to a rare cancer when he was 27 and drew from the experience to write a book about faith and love. She said Brock –– known for starting the Cannonball cross-country road race in the 1970s –– wrote about Alzheimer's in a Vintage Motorsports column, which his daughter edits.

Gefell, who has helped care for her mother for about 10 years, said her mother lived on her own well into her 80s, and at first, her memory problems weren't obvious.

For that reason, earlier diagnosis could have been helpful, she said. But for people without symptoms, the choice is less clear.

I liked Brock's writing for C&D. It was sad to see him go, and even sadder to hear this.

I saw and talked to Mr Yates and his wife at the Syracuse Nationals a couple months ago , he looked good and had is Dodge Challenger Cannon Ball Run car with them , he really seemed to be handling it well as he was talking to people about all sorts of automotive and racing questions . I also got the chance to meet Gene Winfield , what a great guy and one hell of a customizer

Last I heard no, but there is a group that gets together every couple years that does do a run across the country but it is more of a rally than a race .
His challenger is done very nice ,not over the top race just well thought out and sounded really good
