With any vinyl tile system, the sub-flooring must be as close to perfect as possible, as the vinyl is the least forgiving when it comes to imperfections underneath.
I prefer the vinyl squares over the planking, and would only consider it in very wet areas. We always use the type that requires a contact adhesive (for glue down tiles).
I've installed glue down plank system as well, and I was very disappointed with it. The planks were very susceptible to the butt ends opening up with temperature changes. I wasn't pleased with the look of the planks either.
The free float vinyl planking works better then the glue down planks in my experience. That said, I've found that the butt ends with this system can be a PITA to lock together and stay locked. It's possible it was just the brand we use, but I'm not overly pleased with it.
If the areas aren't wet locations, I would choose laminate before vinyl every time. Actually I install a lot of laminate in wet areas as well, but you do have to be more careful in those areas.
