I recently replaced my old stair railing to the basement with a new one. It's wall mounted and currently raw wood, not sure on species...maybe poplar? Anyways, I want to try this as my first stain and finish job. What products should I look for to do this? I've heard Minwax at the local HD or Lowes isn't very good.

Take it down.

Stain and finish in pieces.

Re-install.

Meh, it's a poplar.

Just use minwax stain in your choice of color and a wipe on poly.

Or save a step by using the Minwax Polyshades which is polyurethane fortified.

Also look into painters mitts.

Basically they are gloves that you wear to wipe on the stain.

Poplar doesn't take stain very well.

You want General Finishes stain (can be found at Woodcraft).  Followed by Seal-A-Cell, then Oil and Polyurethane (minimum 3 coats).  Use High Gloss and buff to sheen of your choice.

Pic of railing?  Sure it's poplar?  Kind of an odd choice of wood for somebody to make that out of.

I prefer oil based stains but if you use a water based stain, use a water based poly afterwards.

I've used plenty of Minwax stain and it's fine.

Throw away anything as soft and weak as poplar.
Go get some oak.
