Something is seriously wrong with the appliance industry. It seems as sick as if it were a government-run industry. I say that because -
1. Our clothes dryer died after just a couple of years.
2. It took 3 or 4 visits and 6 weeks for the repairman to fix our dryer.
3. Our washing machine died after just a few years.
4. The replacement washer died after just a few years.
5. Our current washer periodically (randomly, sporadically) spills water.
6. Our refrigerator died six months after the end of the extended warranty (only 4 1/2 years old).
7. The replacement frig is taking 4 weeks for delivery. We don't actually have it, yet, so only time will tell if it takes longer than that.
Ah, I've got it. It IS a sick industry. The insurance companies are involved, selling extended warranties. The players are the repair companies and the insurance companies - the customer's money has already been taken, so they are not a power-player. The under-trained repair man works for some "clearing house" the insurance company contracts with for warranty repair fulfillment. The clearing house is not the best repair shop, they are the low bidder.
As soon as the consumer gives up their money to an insurance company, the business starts to get sick - a third party moves in and takes over the show.
It's the Golden Rule - the one with the gold rules.

You hit the nail on the head. It IS gummint run. The gov imposes laws and regulations and energy efficiency standards that weakens the quality of the product. Why is it that I am REQUIRED to possess a LICENSE to purchase refrigerant but YOU, can walk into any auto parts store and purchase R-134a without any recovery equipment requirement?
One of my manufacturers that I work for, discontinued 2 product lines because they cannot make the product to efficiency standards without lowering the quality. They would rather not make it than jeopardize the good name of the company.
Sub Zero (the ROLLS ROYCE of refrigeration) loses condenser fan motors at an alarming rate. Why? because the EE fan motors SUCK! If you are lucky, it will fail during the warranty period and you wont lose food. If you are unlucky, it will happen after the warranty expires and you will face a $300.00 repair bill and food loss.
If any of you say "Well why can't you make quality AND energy efficiency?" Please, by all means, go to work for an appliance manufacturer and show them how it's done. bet you cant.
My advice? Get the basic units. STOP with the computer boards bullshit. If you can get a mechanical operated appliance, DO IT. If you really want to stroke your ego and get the candy apple red front loading Ferrari washing machine, you better do TWO things.
1. Buy a maintenance contract. I never thought I would EVER say that but it is true. Parts are ridiculously expensive
2. Save money in a bank account for the days you have to take off work to wait for people like me.
Here is food for thought... I have NO MORE AVAILABLE APPOINTMENTS FOR 2014, Next day I am booking for is January 5th and I dont advertise. There is a reason I am this busy. It is not for my charming personality. And you are 100000000000% correct on the low bidder comment. Insurance companies wont use me because I charge a living wage so I can survive. These companies are hiring idiots and I have followed them up many times. The hidden secret on using these companies that many do not know. If you have a maintenance contract, DEMAND they send you a "FACTORY AUTHORIZED REPAIR" company. Not "AUTHORIZED COMPANY"... the key word is FACTORY. Anyone can "authorize" you.
