i've had a few air vents fall out over the past few months and, when trying to re-install them, i find the sheetrock near the fastening sites is crumbling.  I've not been able to get a dry-wall anchor in and (for some vents) there isn't a stud handy to drill in to.

any suggestions?

I've had to retrofit a few of mine with similar issues.

I take a small piece of 1x and cut it the width of the opening.  Pull back the duct and slip the 1x above the sheetrock.  Screw through the duct into the 1x to hold it into place.  This will allow you to screw the vent cover into the 1x and hold it in place.

The vents attach to the end of the duct.
