Our living room in the "new" house had nothing going it for except for some nice custom crown that original owners spec'd when they built the house. The mantle was plain and hideous. I started watching some videos on-line about building bookcases and figured I could do it. I lucked into a Hitachi C10FL table-saw at Lowes (ended up costing me $230, roughly, after all was aid and done) and then set about designing something that would look like it had been there all along.

From last Fall. The bookcases:














Some store-bought moldings, some made with my router:



Once the bookcases were done, I moved on to doing other things and left the whole mantle thing on the back burner. I finally decided that I had to just finish the damn room. My Wife and I went around and around about designs, etc. for a while. After a month of that I said, "Fuck it!!!! I'm building it. I've got a damn good idea what I want it to look like. No more minute detail BS, hunny-bunny....."








It's getting there:





DONE! Started in November, but it's fucking done. I like it, and think I didn't do too badly for my first time building "furniture."

I refaced the entire front of the fireplace with three pieces of wood, two vertical and one long run horizontally. I ran the wood right up to the sides of the bookcases.
