So a friend is offering me a Robinair eight CFM vacuum pump for $100. What do I need to look and doto it one before buying to make sure is a fully operational piece of equipment and not past its useful life. Also I assume it's a good price for one. Thing looks almost brand-new.

Look at the oil. It should be light straw in color, not rusty or milky white. Rusty means it hasn't been changed in a long time, milky white means it's saturated with moisture and should have been changed at last use. This will give you an idea of maintenance.

If you have a micron gauge, or can borrow one, make sure it pulls down to at least 100 microns, although I would prefer to see it at 20-50. If the oil is milky white, it may not pull down because of moisture saturation. Chaning the oil before the pumpdown test will show a more accurate performance.

ETA: spelling and semantics.
No, Mister Smartypants, you're wrong. I took a solemn oath to use their awesome power, never for evil, but only for the good of mankind.
