I have a '93 3500 series 3/4 ton pickup with a blown engine and a 4L80E heavy duty transmission. Can I upgrade to a later model 5.3 Vortec? I know I'll have to upgrade the computer and wiring. I'm wondering about the flywheel and torque converter. Will it even bolt up right to the 5.7 TBI bell housing?

Yes it will bolt up and that is it. You'd be better off getting a complete 'R' motor if you don't mind changing harnesses, computer.

Have you ever added all the electrical needed to go to a EFI like this before? If you dont have EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING, you are going to be screwed. I think you need to stick to the same series of engine that it has unless you are open to a long time of troubleshooting. Yes it can be done, however it will end up not being worth it if it takes months to get it running right.

It is very doable, and is a popular swap now a days.

My thought is if you are thinking of getting a used motor, try to buy a complete totaled vehicle. Everything is there, and even if you decide not to use everything from the donor vehicle, you at least have the opportunity to see exactly how everything is put together.

Once the conversion is complete, part or scrap the remainder of the donor vehicle.

I agree with this. GM sells complete replacement engines that will bolt right in and use all existing harnesses and the same fuel pump (your '93 runs a lower pressure fuel injection, the newer vortec needs a high pressure system, so you will be replacing all fuel lines and fuel pump). I don't know what your needs are but the offer a pretty cool HO 454 replacement engine for that truck.

Call LKQ . http://www.lkqcorp.com/

I bought a 6.0 from them for around 700 dollars with absolutely everything . CPU , Harness , MAF . This would be your best way to go .

I wouldnt get a 5.3 I would go with a 6.0 . They should be about the same price and you will have that extra TQ .

If you run a 383 Stroker you will have plenty of power for most applications but you can run the same general set up that you currently have. Jegs has them that are built by GM Performance, kinda pricey, but pretty fantastic.
