THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT We are told that austerity in Europe has failed. The elections in France and Greece, for instance, are supposedly evidence of people’s opposition to severe cuts in spending. However, the growing anti-austerity backlash in Europe ignores one fundamental point: If there is austerity in Europe, in most cases it hasn’t taken the form of massive spending cuts.

Bottom line: Europe needs to work harder, work longer hours, work later in life, be more productive and pay less in taxes. |

The rest of Europe should have the same work ethics as the Germans. They should have the same work ethic as the Germans (and northern Europe in general, minus France) but they never will. National culture is what defines and drives a country, not a sense of industry or a so-called work ethic. But in the north, hard work and industrial strength is the culture, it's how they define themselves, and it's why southern Europeans look on them as boring, mindless and dangerous automotons. In France, Italy and Greece, la bella vita is the national culture. It's a beautiful thing, so beautiful that northern Europe was willing to subsidize it for years. But times are tough, and in tough times you look after yourself and those closest to you. Facts of life that should not be so dismally unclear to southern Europeans. I lived in Italy for a year and I can truly sympathize with them in a small sense... but in a larger sense I can't... because I grew up in Germany. |
