Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Help with adding hard drive to dvr

Before anyone says it I don't have unlimited internet in my rural local so I can't cut the cable. I'd like to add a hard drive and be able to move it from the living room to the home theater when needed. Can I just use a standard USB cabled drive? Does dish have to be involved? Easy to move recordings over?

I have a vip612dvr and vip722dvr

iirc it must have its own power supply

USB cable. 
Canceled dish last week after over 10yrs. You gotta call and activate it. When I hooked mine up I paid a $10 one time fee
