Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Surround sound issue...

My in-laws' are having an issue with their surround setup. On some of their dvr'd shows, the satellite speakers only put out static. Local channels, DirecTv & online apps all work correctly. 

Tv is a 55" Samsung with the Samsung connect box, VIZIO S4251w-B4  Surround Sound bar and DirecTv.

Any ideas what to check?

Are the dvr'd shows broadcast in 2 channel stereo? It may be that as they watch it live the Direct TV box is compensating and sending a signal to all channels.
But watching in playback mode from the DVR it it doesn't send a signal to all channels just in stereo? Just a wild guess.

Found out, last night, it was a recording of an old western... if that makes a difference.

They didn't tell me that in the beginning. Just that it was a recording.
