I've seen the movie a KABILLION times and tonight it just occurred to me what a raw deal Sgt. Bowren got. The Major didn't have a choice. The prisoners made theirs.......but this guy was minding his own MP business only to find himself volunteered for a suicide mission.
I pour out a tiny bit of the many beers tonight for Sgt Bowren (even though he didn't die....)

I read the novel, many, many moons ago.
He volunteered to go. Oh, yeah: In the novel Major Reisman was a mere Captain. |

That would make sense given the way they subtly play his admiration of Major Reisman over the course of the training portion of the movie.
