THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT Does anyone know if this is just a temporary manufacturing shortage, or have they done away with these for some reason? |

Your best bet is to pick one up from Craigslist.

Most cable/satellite companies rent you a DVR. I also have a DVR/DVD burner combo and the DVD burner part of it shit the bed. I couldn't find another for a reasonable price, so I just bought a DVD burner cheap and hooked the two together. I still want the DVR as I can use it to get rid of commercials.

They are still available overseas e.g. Japan (and with BluRay too) but they are dying off in the US. As mentioned, most are content to rent from the cable companies, streaming netflix, hulu, etc.
I've got a DVDR w/HDD from Magnavox. It was fantastic until Comcrap started encryping all but local channels so now I still have to use their STB to get signal to the recorder. There were some thoughts this might be the last year Magnavox was going to make it, but I haven't checked in on the AVS thread lately. |

After waaaay too much research, I finally ordered one of these. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&sku=659769&is=REG&Q=&A=details
It looks like it should do the job, and has all the features I want. I find it ironic, that a lot of people say DVRs are obsolete, but I can find multiple models of of VHS/DVD recorder machines!
Who the hell is still using vhs tapes?!?!? ![]() |

the price increase may have been due to the hard drive shortage after a bunch of factories got taken out in Asia
I built my own DVR out of a pc |

<rant mode on>
The advent of digital video set the entire industry into a panic. Note that your recorder does not have even one, not one, digital video input. The best you are going to get is composite video, noticeably lower video quality than HDMI. This is classic restrictive behavior - restricting the rights and capabilities of the good people in an attempt to preclude criminals from pirating the digital media. <–– it doesn't work for media, it doesn't work for guns, it just doesn't work. <rant mode off> |
