Some probably is, and then some probably is not.
The movie however does show some historical purports such as persecutions of the early Christian church, the corruption and the drama of the Roman government of that day, and the ruthless intent of Rome concerning them bringing the parts of the know world in those times under their iron hand or control if it were required.
The rest I'm sure was 1962 Hollywood and according to box office sales, as these sorts of gladiator, swash-buckler, and Roman Empire type "cut 'em ups" films were quite popular and in demand back then.
Enjoyed them as a kid myself back then too!
A whole generation of young American kids grew up on these and they actually had influence on us latter on in our lives, some about love, and then others about fighting and warfare to its savage utmost!
They are part of the American culture for all times in my opinion.
Thanks,
