The Bible is full of wonderful proverbs and sayings. But, one of my favorites comes from Kinky Friedman; Courtesy is owed, respect is earned, and love is given. Not a bad way to live your life !

There is a generation that curses its father and does not bless its mother.
There is a generation that is pure in its own eye, yet is not washed from its own filth. There is a generation-------how haughty its eyes and pretentious its looks (Lit and its eyelids lifted up). There is a generation whose teeth are swords, whose fangs are knives, devouring and oppressing from the land and the needy from among mankind. Proverbs 30: 11-14 The Words of Agur |
|
These too are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah, king of Judah, copied.
It is the Glory of God to conceal a matter and the glory of kings to investigate a matter. As the heaven is high and the earth is deep (Lit runs deep), so the hearts of kings cannot be investigated (or anticipated). King Solomon, son of David, son of Jesse. Proverbs 25: 1-3 Hezekiah's Collection |

A king's terrible wrath is like a roaring lion; anyone who provokes him endangers himself.
Proverbs 20:1 A collection of King Solomon's Proverbs |
|
Whoever loves instruction
loves knowledge, but the one who hates correction is stupid. The good obtain favor from the LORD, but He (or God) condemns a man who schemes. Man cannot be made secure by wickedness, but the root of the righteous is immovable. A collection of Solomon's Proverbs Proverbs 12: 1-3 The Learned Student vs.The Schemer |
|
It is honorable for a man
to resolve a dispute, but any fool can get himself into a quarrel. The slacker does not plow during planting season; at harvest time he looks, and there is nothing. Counsel in a man's heart is deep water; but a man of understanding draws it up. Many a man proclaims his own loyalty, but who can find a trustworthy man? The one who lives with integrity is righteous; his children who come after him will be happy. A king sitting on a throne to judge sifts out all evil with his eyes. Proverbs 20: 3-8 A Collection of Solomon's Proverbs of Wisdom and Judgment |
|
Happy is the one who is always reverent,
but the one who hardens his heart, falls into trouble. A wicked ruler over a helpless people is like a roaring lion or a charging bear. A leader who lacks understanding is very oppressive, but the one who hates unjust gain prolongs his life. The one who lives with integrity will be helped, but the one who distorts right and wrong (Lit who is twisted regarding two ways) will suddenly fall. Proverbs 13:4
The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat. |

Genuine righteousness leads
to life, but pursuing evil leads to death. Those with twisted minds are detestable to the LORD, but those with blameless conduct are His delight. Be assured that the wicked will not go unpunished, but the offspring of the righteous will escape (the judgment of the LORD). A beautiful woman who rejects good sense is like a gold ring in a pig's snout. The desire of the righteous turns out well, but the hope of the wicked leads to wrath. The Proverbs and Sayings of Solomon: the Wisest Man Who Ever Lived Proverbs 11: 19-23 A Collection of King Solomon's Proverbs |

When you sit down
to dine with a ruler, consider carefully what is before you, and stick a knife to your throat, if you have a big appetite (or the propensity to say foolish things to a king); don't desire his choice food (or act as he acts or say the things that he says), for that food is deceptive (or that food that can put you in prison; many prisons). Don't wear yourself out to get rich; Stop giving attention to it. As soon as your eyes fly to it, it disappears, for it makes wings for itself (or the illusion of it begins to evaporate) and flies like an eagle to the sky (or flies like the eagle which never returns). Don't eat a stingy person's bread (or don't listen to a person's self-serving talk). and don't desire his choice food (or don't desire his own tidbits of wisdom), for as he thinks within himself, so he is (or the braggart). "Eat and drink," he says to you, but his heart is not with you. You will vomit the little that you have eaten and waste your pleasant words (or waste your pleasant words on him). Don't speak to a fool. for he will despise the insight of your words. Proverbs 23: 1-9 The Ways of Typical Men A Proverb of Solomon; Son of David; Son of Jesse |
|
Listen my son's,
to a father's discipline, and pay attention so that you may gain understanding, for I am giving you good instruction. Don't abandon my teaching. When I was a son with my father, tender and precious to my mother, he taught me and said: "Your heart must hold on to my words. Keep my commands and live. Get wisdom, get understanding; don't forget or turn away from the words of my mouth. Don't abandon wisdom, and she will watch over you; love her; and she will guard you. Wisdom is supreme----- so acquire wisdom. And whatever else that you get, get understanding. Cherish her, and she will exalt you; if you embrace her, she will honor you. She will place a garland of grace on your head; she will give you a crown of beauty to behold. Proverbs 4: 1-9 A Father's Example For His Sons The Proverbs of Solomon; Son of David, King of Israel |

How to Gain Wisdom
by Joyce Meyer - posted August 02, 2014 If you will turn (repent) and give heed to my reproof, behold, I [Wisdom] will pour out my spirit upon you, I will make my words known to you. (Proverbs 1:23) We need to pray and obey God’s leading when He speaks to us. Obedience is not to be an occasional event for us; it is to be our way of life. There’s a big difference between people who are willing to obey God daily and those who are willing to obey only to get out of trouble. God certainly shows people how to get out of trouble, but He bestows abundant blessings on those who decide to live wholeheartedly for Him and who make obedience to Him their lifestyle. The only pathway to true peace is obedience to God. Many people obey God in the big issues, but they aren’t aware that obedience in the little things makes a difference in His plan for their lives. The Bible says plainly that if we are not faithful in the little things, we will never be made rulers over much (see Luke 19:17). There is no reason for God to trust us with a major responsibility if we are not going to be faithful to do the little things He has asked us to do. I strongly urge you to be obedient to God even in the smallest of things. A sixteenth-century monk called Brother Lawrence was well known for walking continually in the presence of God. He said that he was pleased to pick up a piece of straw from the ground in obedience to God and because he loved Him. In the verse for today, God says He will make known His words to us if we listen to Him when He corrects us. If we follow His guidance and are pleased to do each little thing He asks of us, then He will open His wisdom to us, and we will have more revelation than we could ever imagine. |

<>< View Quote A king's heart is a water channel in the LORD's hand: He directs it wherever He chooses. All the ways of a man seem right to him, but the LORD always evaluates the motives. Doing what is righteous and just is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice. The lamp that guides the wicked----- haughty eyes and an arrogant heart-----is sin. The plans of the diligent certainly lead to prophet, but anyone who is reckless only becomes poor. Proverbs 21: 1-5 Solomon's Wise Sayings |
|
When the righteous thrive,
a city rejoices, and when the wicked die, there is joyful shouting. A city is built up by the blessing of the upright, but it is torn down by the mouth of the wicked. Whoever shows contempt for his neighbor lacks sense, but a man of understanding keeps silent. A gossip goes around revealing a secret, but the trustworthy keeps a confidence. Without guidance, people fall, but with many counselors there is deliverance. Proverbs 11: 10-14 Solomon's Wise Sayings |

Differing weights
and varying measures (Lit stone by stone, measure and measure)------- both are detestable to the LORD. Even a young man is known By his actions------ by whether his behavior is pure and upright (or pleasing according to his father's command to his son) The hearing ear and the seeing eye------ the LORD has made them both. Don't love sleep, or you will become poor; open you eyes, and you'll have, enough to eat. "Its worthless, its worthless!" the buyer says, but after he is on his way , he gloats (or he mocks the seller for his ignorance). Proverbs 20: 10-14 Solomon's Proverbs Son of King David King Hezekiah's Collection |

Better a poor man
who walks in integrity than someone who has deceitful lips and is a fool. Even zeal is not good without knowledge, and the one who acts hastily sins. A man's own foolishness leads him astray, yet his heart rages against the LORD. Proverbs of King Solomon, Son of David From the Linage of Jesse to Seth Proverbs 19: 1-3 Hezekiah's Collection Which was Deported to Babylon |
|
A wise son hears his
father's instruction, But a mocker doesn't listen to rebuke. From the words of his mouth, a man will enjoy good things, but treacherous people have an appetite for violence. The one who guards his mouth protects his life; the one who opens his lips invites his own ruin. The slacker craves, and has nothing, but the diligent is fully satisfied. Proverbs of Solomon Who Would Become King in His Father's Place Proverbs 13: 1-4 The Wise Son and the Treacherous Fool |
|
One man pretends to be rich
but has nothing; another pretends to be poor but has great wealth. Riches are a ransom for a man's life, but the poor man hears no threat. The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is extinguished. Arrogance leads to nothing but strife, but wisdom is gained by those who take advise. The Sayings From the Wise Son of King David Proverbs 13: 7-10 Hezekiah's Collection of Wisdom |
|
The lamp (or way) that guides
the wicked--------- haughty eyes and an arrogant heart--------- is sin. The plans of the diligent certainly lead to profit, but anyone who is reckless (or who is reckless on all accounts) only becomes poor. Making a fortune through a lying tongue is a vanishing mist (or a breath blown away), a pursuit of death. The violence of the wicked sweeps them away (or sweeps them away in time) because they refuse to act justly. Solomon's Proverbs and Wise Instruction Proverbs 21: 4-7 The Arrogant and Reckless Man |

As the heaven is high, and the earth is deep, so the hearts of kings cannot be investigated. Remove impurities from silver, and a vessel will be produced (Lit will come out) for a silversmith. Remove the wicked from the king's presence, and his throne will be established in righteousness. Don't brag about yourself before the king, and don't stand in the place of the great; for it is better for him to say to you, "Come up here!" than to demote you in plain view of a noble (Lit before a noble whom your eyes see sit in that place). King Hezekiah's Collection Proverbs 25: 1-7 Glory of God: Glory of Kings |

There is gold and a multitude of jewels,
but knowledgeable lips are a rare treasure. Take his garment (or a debtor's outer garment for collateral), for he has put up security for a stranger; get collateral if it is for foreigners. Food (or gain) gained by fraud (or by misrepresentation) is sweet to a man, but afterward his mouth is full of gravel. Finalize plans through counsel, and wage war with sound guidance. The one who reveals secrets is a constant gossip; avoid someone with a big mouth. King Solomon's Proverbs and Wise Sayings Proverbs 20: 15-19 A Collection of Solomon's Proverbs |

The one who searches
for what is good finds favor, but if someone looks for trouble, it will come to him. Anyone trusting in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like foliage. The one who brings ruin on his household will inherit the wind, and the fool will be a slave to someone whose heart is wise. The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, but violence takes lives. If the righteous will be repaid on earth, how much more the wicked and sinful. The Proverbs and Wise Sayings of Solomon: Son of David: Son of Jesse Proverbs 11: 27-31 Fruit of the Righteous: Repayment of the Wicked |
|
A fool's way is right
in his own eyes, but whoever listens to counsel is wise. A fools displeasure is known at once, but whoever ignores an insult is sensible. Whoever speaks the truth declares what is right, but a false witness, deceit. There is one who speaks rashly, like a piercing sword; but the tongue of the wise brings healing. The Proverbs and Wise Sayings of King Solomon Proverbs 12: 15-18 The Foolish in Their Ways |

The lamp that guides
the wicked-------- haughty eyes and an arrogant heart is sin. Precious treasure and oil are in the dwelling of the wise, but a foolish man consumes them. The wise conquer a city of warriors, and bring down a mighty fortress. The one who guards his mouth and tongue keeps himself out of trouble. Better a poor man
who walks in integrity than someone who has deceitful lips and is a fool. Even zeal is not good without knowledge, and the one who acts hastily sins. A man's own foolishness leads him astray, yet his heart rages against the LORD. Wealth attracts many friends, but a poor man is separated from his friend. A false witness will not go unpunished, and the one who utters lies will not escape. The Cherished Words of King Solomon Proverbs 19: 1-5 Foolishness Against Wealth and Knowledge: Poor Man and False Witness |

The thoughts of the righteous
are just, but guidance from the wicked leads to deceit. The words of the wicked are a deadly ambush, but the speech of the upright rescues them. The wicked are overthrown and perish, but the house of the righteous will stand. A man is praised for his insight, but a twisted man is despised. Better to be dishonored, yet have a servant, than to act important but have no food. The Proverbs of Solomon: King of Israel Proverbs 12: 5-9 Hezekiah's Collection |
|
The LORD made me (or the high mark of wisdom) at the beginning of His creation (or the godly wisdom that God made for all of human kind in the earth) before His works of long ago. I was formed before ancient times, from the beginning, before the earth began. I was brought forth when there were no watery depths and there were no springs filled with water. I was brought forth before the mountains and the hills were established, before God made the land, and the fields, or the first soil on the earth.
I was there (or I was there living and being) when God established the heavens, when He laid out the horizon (or the supposed meeting place) on the surface of the ocean, when He placed the skies above, when the fountains (or the inner gates were opened at the time of Noah) of the ocean (or great ocean) gushed forth, when God set a limit for the sea so that the waters would not violate His command, when He laid out the foundations (or all of His statutes, laws, and precepts) of the earth. I was a skilled craftsman beside Him. I was His delight every day (or His delight as a perfect and ordered creation toward God), always rejoicing (or always being successful in all seasons) before Him. I was rejoicing in His inhabited world, always being a delight to the human race. Wisdom Speaks Through the Holy Spirit of God Proverbs of Solomon 8: 22-31 Wisdom's Appeal: Fountains and Foundations Laid |
|
And now my sons, listen to me; those who keep my ways are happy. So therefore listen to instruction and be wise; don't ignore it. Anyone who listens to me is happy (or will be fulfilled), watching at my doors every day, waiting by the posts of my doorway. For the one who finds me finds life and obtains favor from the LORD, but the one who sins against me only harms himself; all who hate me love death (or who hate me will receive death as their ransom).
The Proverbs and Wise Instruction of King Solomon; Son of King David Proverbs 8: 32-36 King Hezekiah's Collection |
|
Doesn't Wisdom call out? Doesn't Understanding make her voice heard? At the heights overlooking the road, at the crossroads, she takes her stand. Beside the gates at the entry to (Lit the mouth of) city, at the main entrance, she cries out: " People, I call out to you; my cry (or my plea) is for mankind. Learn to be shrewd, you who are inexperienced; develop common sense, you who are foolish.
Listen for I speak noble things, for my mouth tells the truth, and wickedness is detestable to my lips. All of the words of my mouth (or the words of wisdom whatever their source) are righteous (or and even when they are spoken by the unrighteous); none of the are deceptive or perverse. All of them are clear concerning their perceptive, and right to those who discover knowledge in them. The Wise Writings and Perspective of King Solomon Proverbs 8: 1-9 Hezekiah's Collection: Wisdom and Understanding Call Out |
|
Accept my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than pure gold. For wisdom is better than precious stones, and nothing desirable can compare with it. I, Wisdom, share a home with shrewdness and have knowledge and discretion. To fear (or to reverence or to understand) the Lord is to hate evil. I hate arrogant pride, evil conduct, and perverse speech. I possess good advise and competence (or resourcefulness). I have understanding and strength,
It is by me that kings reign and rulers enact just law (or enact just law through the law of God and to know that this is best); by me, princes lead, as do nobles (or the ones who petition the king for the peoples needs) and all of the righteous judges (or the acting nobles who will judge the earth). I love those who love me, and those who search for me find me. With me are riches and honor, lasting wealth (or lasting wealth through righteousness) and righteousness (or through God's righteousness to the receiver). My fruit is better (or more valued by the upright who love justice) than solid gold, and my harvest than the purest of silver. I walk in the way of righteousness, along the path of justice (or the path of equity and impartiality toward justice), giving wealth (or lasting blessings or life) as an inheritance to those who love me, and filling their treasuries (or filling their hearts with abundant knowledge concerning what is right and honorable). The Proverbs and Wise Instruction of King Solomon, Son of David Proverbs 8: 10-21 Wisdom's Appeal: The Reward of the Obedient Son or Daughter |
|
I walk the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice, giving wealth (or prosperity) as an inheritance (or the wages of long term obedience) to those who love me (or love me in a mature and perfecting way), and filling their treasuries (or the tablets of their hearts). The LORD made (or possessed or begot) me at the beginning (or at the beginning of creation) of His creation (or His way), before His works of long ago. I was formed before ancient times, from the beginning before the earth began.
The Proverbs and Wise sayings of God Through King Solomon of Israel Proverbs 8: 20-23 The Spirit of Wisdom Speaks: The Way of Righteousness Leading to Perfection |

Wisdom has built her house; she has carved out her seven pillars (or has presented her seven principles and precepts for the ultimate success). She has prepared her meat (or has presented the deeper realities of her teachings and knowledge), she has mixed her wine (or has even prepared the way of the foolish if they do not understand her meaning). She has also sent out her servants; she calls out (or beacons everyone) from the highest points of the city:
"Whosoever is inexperienced, enter in here." Proverbs and Wise Sayings of Solomon Proverbs 9: 1-4 Wisdom Calls Out: The Seven Pillar of Wisdom |
|
"Come, eat my bread, and drink the wine I have mixed (or study the mark of wisdom versus the mark of a fool). Leave inexperience behind and you will live; pursue the way of understanding. The one who corrects a mocker will bring dishonor on himself; the one who rebukes a wicked man will get hurt (or should expect retaliation).
Don't rebuke a mocker or he will hate you; rebuke a wise man, and he will love you (or he will honor you in return). Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man and he will learn more (or will increase his stamina and inner strength as a man). The fear (or reverence, solemn respect, or admiration) of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Solomon's Proverbs and Wisest Sayings Proverbs 9: 5-9 Wisdom versus Foolishness: Blessing and Curse |
|
Whoever curses his father
or mother------- his lamp will go out in darkness. An inheritance gained prematurely will not be blessed ultimately. Don't say, "I will avenge this evil!" Wait on the LORD and He will rescue you. Differing weights (Lit a stone and a stone; unequal counter balances) are detestable to the LORD, and dishonest scales are unfair. A man's steps are determined by the LORD, so how can anyone understand his own way? Proverbs and Wise Instruction of King Solomon Proverbs 20: 20-25 Hezekiah's Collection |
|
The fear (or the reverence or the worship) of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding (or the understanding of God's laws according to their precepts). For by wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life (or as if by wisdom they are gained through upright knowledge). If you are wise, you are wise for your own benefit; if you mock (or if you become arrogant according to thinking only of yourself in your successes), then you alone will bear the consequences.
The Proverbs and Wise Instruction of King Solomon Son of David His King Proverbs 9:10-12 The Fear of the LORD: The Beginning of Wisdom |
|
The woman Folly is rowdy (or is a brawler when roused); she is gullible and knows nothing (or is a prostitute who understands little). She sits by the doorway of her house, on a seat at the highest point of the city (or by the highest point that she commands by the many, who by their own lust and sexual immorality have placed her there), calling those who pass by, who go straight ahead on their paths: "Whoever is inexperienced, enter here!"
To the one who lacks sense she says, "Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten secretly is tasty!" But he doesn't know that the departed spirits are there (or the one who sleeps with her in the spirit sleeps with all to the degradation of all who go into her), and her guests (or the malicious and unlawful acts of all of her partakers) are in the depths of Sheol (or are being kept in the storehouses of God's judgments according to his ultimate downfall or when he in turn prostitutes himself with the dead forever). The Proverbs and Wise Sayings of Solomon Son of David Proverbs 9: 13-18 The Woman Named Folly: God's Judgments Being Stored Up for the Sexually Immoral |
|
A wise servant will rule over
a graceful son and share an inheritance among brothers. A crucible is for silver and a smelter for gold but the LORD is the tester of hearts. A wicked person listens to malicious talk (Lit to lips of iniquity) a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue. The one who mocks the poor insults his Maker; the one who rejoices over disaster will not go unpunished. Grandchildren are the crown of the elderly, and the pride of sons is their fathers. The Proverbs of Solomon King of Israel Proverbs 17: 2-6 A Wise Servant: The Pride of the Fathers |
|
My son, obey my words, and treasure my commands. Keep my commands and live; protect my teachings as you would the pupil of your own eye. Tie them (or them the law) to your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.
Say to wisdom, "You are my sister," and call understanding your relative. She will keep you from the forbidden woman, a stranger with flattering talk. The Proverbs and Wise Sayings of King Solomon King of Israel Proverbs 7: 1-5 Warning Against Adultery: Obey God's Law: Acquiring God's Wisdom and Knowledge |
|
When a mocker is punished,
the inexperienced become much wiser; when one teaches a wise man, he acquires knowledge. The Righteous One (or God) considers the house of the wicked; He brings the wicked to ruin. The one who shuts his ears concerning the cry of the poor will himself call out and not be answered. A secret gift sooths anger, and a covert bribe (Lit a bribe in the bosom) fierce rage. Justice executed is a joy to the righteous but a terror to those who practice iniquity (or who practice lawlessness). The Proverbs of Solomon; Son of King David Proverbs 21: 11-15 Hezekiah's Collection of Wise Sayings |
|
At the window of my house I looked through my lattice. I saw among the inexperienced (or simple, or gullible, or naïve), I noticed among the youths, a young man lacking sense. Crossing the street near her corner, he strolled down the road to her house At twilight, in the evening, in the dark of the night.
A woman came to meet him, dressed like a prostitute, having a hidden agenda (or a prostitute with a guarded heart). She is loud and defiant; her feet do not stay at home. The Proverbs and Wise Instruction of Solomon the Wise King Proverbs 7: 6-11 A Story of Seduction: The Young or Inexperienced Wayward Man |
|
The man who strays
From the way of wisdom will come to rest in the assembly of the departed spirits. The one who loves pleasure will become a poor man; whoever loves wine and oil will not get rich. The wicked are a ransom for the righteous, and the treacherous, for the upright. Better to live in a wilderness than with a nagging and hot-tempered wife. Precious treasure and oil are in the dwelling of the wise, but the foolish man consumes them.
