I bought a winch and a receiver hitch so I can mount it to my tow hitch. Problem is the leads on the winch won't reach the battery. Can someone give me a parts list? Do I just need a 4 guage 6/12v extension cable? How to I hook the winch up to the cables?

how many amps does the winch pull?   total length of leads plus extension?  may need more than 4 gauge wire

Think more like 00 or 000 gauge and Anderson connectors.

how do I go from the battery to one of the connectors and from the winch to the other connector?

When questions like these get asked, I feel like you are best to take it to a pro...  it seems over your head and capabilities.

ahhh gotcha, just get one of these, some butt splices, and double heat shrink it.

one HP is a little more that 60 amps at load, so keep that in mind.

because I have never done something before, I should take it to a pro? I built 3 lowers and 1 upper using information provided by this website. Should I have taken those to a pro? you don't learn by having someone else do them.

If you want something like this.

You're gonna have to run a wire under the truck from the battery to the back or pop your hood and hook up a jumper set up like this.

Either way this is the best place to get the Anderson connectors.https://powerwerx.com/anderson-sb-connectors-sb50-50amp

Either way I would incorporate a 50AMP trolling motor circuit breaker somewhere in the Hot (+) lead from the battery. Use one color connector's for the battery hook up and another color connector's to the hand controller and the winch motor.

Edit: I have a 5K lb 1 HP TS winch mounted to my boat trailer tongue to launch and retrieve my boat down my private ramp at our lakeplace without using a vehicle. It is powered by the group 31 AGM battery under the front casting deck for the trolling motor. I can pull the whole 1,700 lb rig up the very steep ramp 45' to under the boat shed in one continuous pull without the winch motor even getting warm to the touch. I'm only using 6 gauge wire. If you plan on pulling more than 2K lbs I would move up to the SB350 connectors and 4 gauge wire.
