I remember them as being better.

My current car has a tiny little shifter on the console.  It seems pretty wussy in comparison.

Why aren't column-mounted shifters still the standard?

because most cars have the wiper controls on the right side of the column... back in the day the wipers were a 3 function affair located on the dash.

My current one is a dial.  It's an auto transmission.  I don't really care how I select forwards, backwards or this is where I'm going to leave it for a bit.

Because that's we're they were on my father's Oldsmobile.

Because people who are wimpy and weak want to think they are driving a macho stick shift.

cop cars are still column shifted.
room for the gun rack instead of a center console.

It is funny how things come around again though.
push button transmission controls went out in 1965 and are back again in 2016 in the new lincon.

Mercedes also had a "column" shift in their cars and suv's. but it was more electronics. push up for reverse, down for drive, in for park.

but the reason for them kind of went away. no one offers a front bench seat.
I would also guess it would be difficult to have a center air bag, so they force people to sit to one side.

Got a new F-150 yesterday.  It is column shift.

I learned to drive a stick in a 66 Chevy PU.
Three on the tree.  1st wasn't syncro'd.  Drum brakes all around, no power steering.
I was thirteen.  I had to help my family haul firewood out of the hills.  As soon as I could reach the pedals I was drafted.
Today's candy-asses wouldn't go near a rig like that.

Come to think of it nowadays neither would I.

Bullshit....because I own one .  And technically my wife and I are mellenials since we're 32 and 30 respectively.

The 3 on the tree is basically the anti theft system for that truck nowadays. .  For that reason alone I don't feel like changing it out, though I probably will if it becomes a daily driver.

I liked column manuals.
Our neighbor had a Mercedes with a column 4 speed.

And I like bench seats, bring them back.
My wife could act like a debutante next to me

Because in the day of 10speed automatic transmissions you are going to have some buttons somewhere anyhow and a console shifter or steering wheel is far more ergonomic than a shift stalk

Do you really think most of the new shifters are mechanical in nature as far as actually shifting the transmission? They may FEEL mechanical but they are not actually attached to the transmission by a mechanical linkage.

How about an old Oliver shift pattern.

lol, that doesn't make them more reliable.
I had 30 year old cars with the pushbutton that never needed anything for the transmission.
I really doubt you can say the same for any modern car.

Is it a real bench seat or split bench?

Split bench (40/20/40) with the back of the center section folding down into a functional console, instead of a console that folds up to be used as a semi-functional seat.

Trucks have column mounted shifters.  Hippy cars have tiny little knobs on the console.

Add a Under/Direct/Over to that and you have something.  Ala' 2-85 White.

I like the old JD shifters better.

The current GM full size trucks still have them.

Toyota sells the Tundra with either a column shift, or a center console shift, depending on if you get the split bench or bucket seats. I prefer the center console shift myself.
