Looking at 4Runners and found a clean 04 with right at 100k.

Doing a little research I see a few threads about blown head gaskets.  Are they to be avoided or is the issue overblown?

Check out Tacoma World forums...I'm not aware of the issue. Had a 2006 4.0 for 90k miles and now a 2014 4.0 with 25k.
Some quick googling of "Tacoma World Head Gasket" didn't show anything significant...I know yours is a 4Runner but should be same motor?

If the price was right I'd jump on an 04 with that mileage. I'll be looking at the 4Runner in 2020 when I'm done with my current 2014 Tacoma.

(meant to add to my post, not comment...post whore)

Never done head gaskets on 4.0, and don't remember seeing anyone else doing them, either.

The timing covers leak on the pre '08's, but that's about it for problems on that motor.

It's in the running for ugliest engine ever, but it's pretty dang reliable.

Bought mine new in 08.

I've maintained it,  but it's been flawless for 162k miles.

Still feels sounds and runs strong.

If I remember correctly, 03-05 4.0's had head gasket problems. Or it was 03-04. Check out T4R.org and search the 4th gen section.

Yes, the 03-04 4runners with the 4.0 V6 had head gasket issues. I would stick to 05+ 4th gen 4runners, personally.

There are early 2nd gen Tacomas with the 4.0s starting to have issues show as well; it seems to show up around 150,000 miles or so.  Supposedly Toyota fixed the issue in later models but I'm not sure when.

<---- Early '05 Tacoma owner; would not buy again and I normally love Toyotas.
