Girl is looking for a new car and likes the VW passat. Anyone have one?
|

Wife owned a 2010 TDI Jetta and a 2012 Golf TDI (gave to daughter for school) and have a 2015 GTI(gas) now. Love em.
Although nice, Passat was always a bit too large for our needs. |
|
I just bought a 2015 Golf Sportwagen (TDI 6-speed).
Really, really like it. |
|
I love my 2000 Golf GLS TDI. I bought it new - 15 years and 140,000 miles and still going strong. I know VWs aren't exactly known for reliability, but mine hasn't given me any more trouble than our 1998 Toyota Sienna. Both have been trouble free.
FWIW, I recommend registering over at www.tdiclub.com. It is the ARFCOM of TDIs and there is a wealth of info over there. You may also want to find a good diesel mechanic. They may be better not, but when I bought my car, the techs at the local VW Dealerships weren't very good with diesels. |
|
Thanks for the replies guys look at the Passat, Mazda 6, and Cadillac ats
I need the bigger cars because I'm 6'8" the Jetta was a little small. Any opinions on alternatives? She drives 80 miles a day and the diesel looks like it'd pay itself back relatively over the gas |
|
my brotrher has driven diesel jetta's for the last 20 years or more. He has one that is getting close to 500 000 kilometers on it..he is a heavy equipment mechanic by trade so his vehicles get well looked after..the fact he has consistently bought jetta's tells me they must be damn near bullet proof.

FWIW my wife and I are starting to look for her next car. We're leaning toward the TDI Passat, but since she drives mostly in the city, I want her to look at the Camry and Accord hybrids, too.

I am currently looking at a 2013 Passat tdi for myself, I do 125 miles a day round trip 80% interstate. I had a older Passat tdi (1996) sold it at 300,000 miles just did the fluids and filters, timing belt and brakes. I bough it with 130k and never had to replace the clutch etc.
The new ones have a double clutch DSG (direct shift gearbox) , which I currently have in my Audi A3. seems to be a good transmission, it is gears but computer controlled and shifts pretty darn fast. Read up on tdiclub.com , great source of info for all TDI motors. the one I had constantly ran 47-50 mpg at 75 mph for the bulk of my drive. Maintenance is a thing to live by with them, but the reward is longevity and the MPG's. |
|
I have a 2003 Jetta TDI and I love that car. Great engines to mod on too.

I cannot speak to the TDI, but I have a 2013 Passat. It is a great car.

He's got around 30,000 miles on it now (takes it on lots of road trips), and he loves it. He says it makes around 48-52 MPG on the highway depending on the speed he's going. |
|
Great cars....just make sure she understands if she has a ditz moment and puts gas in it, it's going to be an expensive mistake
|
|
I had a 1999 Passat wagon (gas, not diesel). I loved the car but, damn, it liked spending time at the mechanic's shop. And everything was expensive for that car. There was a time when I thought I wanted a diesel but then I heard you have to change the timing belt every 87 miles and lost interest.
I really like VW's but I'll never own another one. Other cars are much more reliable and economical to maintain. |

My dad has a '13 Passat diesel. 54mpg highway, 30+ around town.

I really like my 13 golf tdi, bought it new in the summer of 2013, it's got about 40k miles on it now.
I had the car dpf deleted and tuned before it had 1000 miles on it, work done by digisport in denton tx, tune came from mark malone from malone tuning ltd out of canada. I get around 43mpg mixed driving and I don't baby it or drive for mileage. also the car is faster than a GTI in acceleration, top speed etc. Another cool thing is the cars are rated to tow 3650 lbs lol. I regularly haul my motorcycle on my trailer around. Have halled lots of stuff. I got the curt hitch with the 2" euro ball. Doesn't even feel like anything is back there when pulling my 5x8 utility trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msTAuWSVHEM |

I had an older one (2002 Golf) and loved it. Great mileage. Lots of little problems along the way, but usually the kind of stuff you can fix yourself after a few minutes on TDIclub. Very dependable - never left me stranded or anything like that. Definitely get a VCDS dongle though for any VW.

Maybe 54mpg at 65mph drafting behind a larger vehicle lol. Hypermiling isn't practical for your everyday person however. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

My 2002 got 50mpg @ 70mph and 55mpg @ 65mph, and that was repeatable. But I don't know if the newer ones do quite as much. |

The little diesel engines VW puts out are nice, but VW electronics as a whole suck. I've owned two and both had issues...never again. YMMV.

Before dropping the coin, you might want to read up on the fuel pump problems they are having.
The High Pressure Fuel Pumps (HPFP) have a very significant rate of failure... and by failure, I mean catastrophic failure... and by catastrophic failure, I mean the fuel pump internally disintegrates, and puts metal shavings/particles through the entire fuel system. If it happens, they have to tear out everything forward of the fuel tank. It's about a $10k repair bill. VW has acknowledged the problem, and was still covering the vehicles if they were under warranty (last I heard, anyway...), but has refused to initiate a recall. ETA: There is a 50+-page thread on it on TDI club (follow the link) |

The dpf system on my f250 burns about a gallon every time it decides to do its cleaning thing. She won't be hauling anything with it but it still sounds funny towing with a car that has a higher tow rating than my old wrangler. Lol |

My one word of advice that concerns VW:
RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
|

I had a '79 rabbit diesel. You couldn't kill that thing with a .50 bmg.
|
|
We test drove some cars today and she like VW the best. Now she's deciding between the Passat and Jetta.
|
|
|
I also have an 82 Rabbit diesel sitting in my parent's quonset in Kansas. I need to tow it back to Colorado and get the water pump replaced. It's gonna be fun to drive that thing in Denver traffic!
Did you test drive a Jetta Sportwagen? I think those cars look great. |

I still have one in my lot I don't go to. I wonder if it's repairable. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:
