Prerunner Double Cab V6 4x2 MSRP $25,060

TRO off road package $3,560

Tow Package $650

Entune Plus $680

Carpet mats, delivery, proscessing, handling, blah blah Window sticker total $30,759.00

So, no trade in, no financing, what should I pay final drive away price?

end update.

I need to buy my son a pickup within the next few months.  Two main questions:

1) What make/model?

                        .  I am leaning
towards Tacoma, but am open to suggestions

2) Best way to buy it.

                        .  End of
the month?

                        .  Auction?

Requirements:

.  It is meant to last him a long
time.

.  I do not want to spend $50-$70k.

.  Does not need to be 4wd.

.  Must have at least small back
seats, but does not have to be quad cab.

get a base or as much of a base version of a Tacama 2wd extra cab.

haggle, go to 2 or 3 dealers or something, show the dealer the business cards from the other dealers, shows you're prepared to walk and have options and don't need their raw deal if they give you a raw deal

Is a truck without 4x4 still a truck?

Cant really buy 2wd trucks up here or you would be pushing it in the winter through 4ft snow drifts!

I have owned my 2003 tundra since new and it has been problem free.  I recommend a Tundra or Tacoma for a long lived truck.

Around here, you're much more likely to get a good deal on a Tundra than a Tacoma. I went looking for a 1-3 year old Tacoma last summer and comparably-equipped (but much more powerful) Tundras were cheaper and more comfortable, with very little real-world difference in gas mileage between the two.

I wound up with 5.7l Tundra Doublecab.

The new Colorado is a decent small truck. I've driven many and we can't keep them on the lot.

How much money do you have?

I'd buy a 1999-2003 7.3 f-250 350 or 1998-2002 dodge cummins 5.9 both extended cab short beds. If you like gas truck Chevy/gmc also made 5.3 or 6.0 through early to late 2000s in extended cabs.

I don't like to buy the first year of a vehicle model or a major redesign, they usually have bugs that get ironed out in later years.  They haven't made Colorados for a few years, correct?  That isn't a deal breaker, but how would I know about reliability?

Also, don't you get more truck for your money from other makers?  I don't know, just asking.

Definitely gas for this one, not diesel.   I don't mind buying used, but it would have to be relatively recent, and I thought there were no good deals on low mileage late model vehicles lately?

350-400 lbs of sand in the bed of my 1998 2wd pickup and I have run pretty much everywhere the past 8 years without an issue.

This^^

I grew up in NH and we never had a 4wd anything. If you can't make it thru a few months of snow without 4wd,  you might need to reevaluate your driving habits and/or skill. Just sayin'...

Do yourself a favor an buy a nice Chevy/gmc 5.3 or 6.0 extended cab.

If he'll never tow anything substantial a 1500 series is fine.

I used 4wd yesterday on muddy slick dirt and grass to get up an incline, it's worth it despite what 2wd guys say.

My driving in snow consists of an area northwest of Marquette, MI. in the upper peninsula.  This area receives around 200" + of snow a year.  After a 30" snowstorm and plows arent coming around for two days,  the sandbags won't do much for me in 2WD.

The New Hampshire comment does not impress me as they don't receive nearly as much snowfall.  I'm pretty sure a Corolla would do me fine in NH.

Not a lot of snow or mountains around here.  No real need for 4 wheel drive on this truck.

I just purchased a 2015 tundra.

More factory incentives for the tundra.  I got zero % apr for 48 months.  Dealer will likely negotiate on the tundra, but I'm not so sure on the Taco.

There are no discount on the Taco due to their popularity.  they get just about the same gas mileage.

Dollar for dollar, tundra seems like a better deal.  with similiar options, they are about 5k apart.  But the tundra rides better and has more power.

The Taco is due for redesign for 2016.  The tundra just had a mild face lift in 2104.  but the tundra drivetrain pretty much remain the same since 2007.

The Taco is smaller and better for trails,  the tundra is better as work truck.

Check Costco Service for auto buying program.  I went through them and got a good deal.

I would start looking around on the Internet.

This past February I bought a new 2014 F150 XLT 4x4 for almost $11,000 off the sticker (sticker was a little over $44,000).

I drove 2.5 hours to a dealership near Atlanta becouse they had some great deals.

Local ford and chevy dealers were not even close.
