What's powering the headlight on that YZ? Total loss off a battery or do you have one of those elusive "works" stators that are floating around for big bucks.

Nothing lol Its fake as chit.

I just run it sometimes because I often have to ride fire service or cnty dirt rds, to get to the good stuff. That, and like this ride, where we came out waaaaay over on the other side of the mtn, and had to ride back 8-9 miles of paved roads to get to the truck. That fake light goes a long ways in keeping me outta trouble with the leos and forest service guys. Also sometimes just better PR with the locals then the number plate.

Steahly makes a lighting stator for about $150ish tho.

Oh haha.

That Steahly is only 30W though. Not enough for serious night racing. There are 150W and 200W setups out there but you have to spend about $500 on them.

It looks good with the light.

Agree, its not near enough for racing. For that, I'd use my total loss HID helmet light. I used to race mtn bikes in the solo class, during 12 hour endurance events. Its the way to go imo. Bike mounted light leaves a lot to be desired. I did sometimes use a cheapie light on the bike too, but more so to help with the loss of depth perception during night racing.

Took the dual sports to Bald Eagle State Forest (near State College PA) with my wife this weekend. She is close to being better than me already. Not that it's hard. Technical rocky riding, lots of fun. She broke her clutch lever and pushed/ghost rode her bike two miles while I got the truck to pick her up (we couldn't get it to start after she dumped it in a mud hole and broke the lever). She was all smiles though so it was all good. Made a stop at Troeg's Brewery in Hershey on the way home. Fantastic food. Lamb falafel on naan, pulled brisket with horseradish mustard slaw, and Mad Elf cheese sauce. Great beer as well.

First long distance trip with my dad. From Dallas area up to northern Arkansas area. The Hub is an awesome hotel near the old Dog Patch USA amusement park. On our ride up we rode through 29-31 degree temps getting to the hotel at 1 a.m. Was an interesting ride for sure! Mt Magazine in Arkansas is the highest mountain peak, has an awesome lodge and a hang glider launch area that is great just for the view of the valley below.

Phil and Debbie at the HUB are great folks, and great friends.

There is also a very nice Lodges at Petit Jean Mountain State Park, and Queen Wilhelmina State Park.

There was about a 6" drop at the edge of the asphalt. The road was very steep too which is hard to see from the video.  Dumb luck plus lack of attention also contributed.

A couple photos from Bald Eagle State Forest in PA this past weekend. Rode some amazing smooth shale and then technical rocky single track. My wife is getting way more comfortable and had a great time riding her 1993 DR350. Riding and camping up there is incredible. I only broke my brush guard and fairing so it was a great weekend!

Sunday morning woke up to rain so I took a solo short ride in the mist to explore more trail while the wife read a book in the truck.

My e-start upgrade plan would be to sell it and find a clean '04-'07 450/525 EXC.

And my plan was to flip this bike and do that...but I've ridden it a couple of times in the last few days and I'm loving it. Think I'll keep it awhile.

It can be done pretty cheaply, really, if you can source the parts at a deal (my buddy did his for under $150 by scouring Craigslist and fleabay), and really changes the utility of the bike. First time you kill/flood it on the side of a snotty single track trail, you'll pine for the magic button.

I've owned a 525exc, and while it's a superb bike in many respects, the XR400 is a better all around dual sport IMHO. Not a better offroad bike, mind you, but a better mix of capabilities and fucking stone-simple to own/work on/maintain. Better road manners/comfort, for sure.
