The weather is starting to cool off a little and I had the dirt bikes out today getting them ready for trail ride season (any month other than June - September here in Louisiana ).

I would like to get an ATV for the wife to ride when I go on trail rides. She doesn't want a dirt bike but would be ok on a 4 wheeler.
I want something that would be fun for me (6'5@260lbs) and has winch mounting capabilities. The ability to ride two up comfortably is a plus too.

I'm thinking something in the 500-800cc range with 4wd.

I'm not read up on all the latest and greatest but remember from years ago that Hondas were pretty bullet proof.

I would like to keep costs below $8k

What would you recommend?

Oh, this is a pic request thread too

I have a 2012 Polaris Sportsman because I couldn't find a Honda at the time.  If I had a choice I would look for a Honda that has enough cc's and is fuel injected.  You will have yourself a winner.  I am sure the other Japanes brands are good but whenever I see old beat up ATV's still running, they are usually a Honda.  I do see an occasional old Suzuki quad but primarily Honda.

i have a Honda Foreman 450 ES. its pretty much a tractor. i haul loads of brick and firewood, hunt, and trail ride with it. it will get up to about 45mph but ive only been that fast a few times. my wife and kids love to ride. mine has over 3000 miles on it and the engine has never been messed with.

Yamaha Grizzly 700.

They might be a little over $8k now.  I gave $7200 for mine back in 2006.

My personal favorite (older) ATV is my 2001 Kawasiki Prairie 400 4x4. Doesn't like to idle above 11000 feet too well but right now someone screwed up the float while rebuilding the carb so it doesn't go up hill well at all.

I fell in love with the current Arctic Cat lineup. One of the dealers local to my parents lets me drive a tracked one around town...tells me to get it stuck and I still have yet to do that. Those mat-tracks are harder to stick in 4 feet of powder than a snow machine is.

Polaris Sportsman would be my first choice. Yamaha Grizzly would be my second.

teh popular affordable choices are the grizzly or the sportsman, but take a serious look at the CanAm Outlander. Amazingly comfortable and capable rig.

The more reading I do the more I think a Yamaha Grizzly 700 seems like what I'm looking for. Great reliability, ground clearance, locking front differential and decent fuel capacity/mileage.   I see them online for around $7k plus taxes.   The Polaris Sportsman 800 looks like a winner too.

another vote for the polaris.
I have a 2011 sportsman 500h.o. with around 1200+/- miles on it been a great atv.

I do recommend getting the fuel injected and power steering. mine has the carb. and is a little hard to start sometimes.
Polaris winch, polaris lock and ride cargo box, seat back, storage bags and a tank saddle.
