So I had some tard turn in front of me.  Tried to avoid him but hit his
front left corner instead.  Road was wet.  Went skidding across a
driveway and stopped a few feet into someone's lawn.  05 (or so) Saturn
Vue.  Wrecked (his wife's) bumper, headlight, and fender.  They didn't
have insurance.

My damage consisted of the fender, ground
effects, just a hint of the front clip being tweaked, and wheel
alignment (steering wheel was about 45 degrees off).  I had to remove
the headlight bezel so it would open all the way.

surprisingly, My insurance totaled my car, but then I guess a worn out 89 base firebird with 280k miles isn't worth a whole lot.

Payout
would have been about $1300, with a buy-back of about $190, so I bought
it back, pocketed the money, and did some hammering.  (Ironic that I
had no trouble finding several of these cars in wrecking yards over the
years right up until this incident.  Suddenly no one has them anymore
locally, otherwise I would have just replaced the fender)

Smart move. The parts on popular vehicles (in their day) like this are often no very hard to find.
Luckily for some of us (I own an '86 VW), the tax man and the insurance companies don't value these old cars that have fully depreciated long ago.
With dumb programs like Cash for Clunkers, some of these older used cars in good running condition can bring more than they are "worth".

I have a 95 Cobra and I know one day in the future this may be my situation.

Currently body parts are plentiful as 94-98s are everywhere.   But eventually the good parts will be used up.    My car is mostly a shell for aftermarket parts but I have a nice shell at the moment.

I also have a low miles 96 Mercedes e320 that I am convinced is worth more to part out than to try to sell.    Awesome condition bkdy/interior/low miles engine.    Car may only fetch 3500-4500 tops(67k miles).    To sell it and deal with low ballers just isnt worth my time so I am gonna run it til it dies and as soon as a repair is something outside of normal maintence I will just scrapit.

You'd be surprised at what a good body guy can do even without replacement parts available.  Costs some more labor, so they prefer replacements over hacking their own.  However, if you're looking at $4k to make some parts fix a known good car (other than some body damage) vs $5k for a used in unknown condition or 30k for new...  :-)

I was in the same boat this time last year.  My '95 GT was also a shell with mostly aftermarket parts, up to the point where I was caught in the middle of 4 women drivers that decided I didn't need my car anymore.
I got an insurance check for $6200 after buying back my car for $325.  No way was I going to rebuild it with a salvage title and not be able to insure it for full coverage. So I parted it out and got about $10K for everything and now have a '15 on order.

I once new a girl in a 95 Cobra who decided to use my F150's brakes. I was stopped and she hit me doing 30...totaled the thing (did $100 of damage to my back bumper). Insurance payout on that thing was pretty good at the time.

My 04 Trailblazer is only worth full insurance because of the radio equipment in it that is literally worth more than it is.

My 99 Cherokee, the insurance company wanted to total it due to $2000 of hail damage...I ran into some golf balls going 75 mph one night...I'll just leave it as it is until I wear that uni-body out.

My Toyota after a head on collision(not my fault) on the highway at speed, I was also side swiped by a box truck and rear ended by a Chevy HHR.
The car that hit me, a 4 door sedan, my car and the Chevy were all totaled. The box truck had a few hundred dollars damage to it according to the state trooper to worked the accident.
The passenger of the car that hit me, the guys g/f, was killed and died on the scene.

Thanks, it is good to still be here.

It was a rough morning.
The back end was damaged also, the only side not touched was the drivers side. Because the front and rear were pushed together, they had to use a sticky tarp to keep the drivers side door closed.

Just goes to show the difference between the insurance company saying its totaled because it's an older vehicle and it actually being totaled.

I don't recommend being in and accident this bad but., if you are do it in a Corolla. I forced the drivers door open and walked away. My injuries were minimal, no broken bones.
