THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT , but with the new tires I now get about 240 miles to a tank, whereas before I would be lucky to get 200 (all city driving). The new tires are a little smaller than the old ones (245/65-17 vs 265/55-17), but surely that can't account for the difference, could it?

The tire size and resulting incorrect odometer reading accounts for about 10 miles of the difference.
The rest of it is probably a combination of old tires and incorrect inflation. |

There is a 3.6% difference in speed between the 2 tire sizes you listed....

Ah, of course, I hadn't considered the odometer discrepancy caused by the difference in tire size.

The above plus the tire may be slightly lighter and have less rolling resistance than your previous set which could account for a slight increase
