THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I have an auto 00 eclipse gs 4cyl. im debating on buying a new mustang or genesis coupe. Problem is Im in school and most of it would be paid with my student loans. Im debating on just turboing my car which has 117,000 miles.

What does arfcom think? buy new car, turbo old one. or do nothing and be happy with what I have. ( I know it's the smartest route, but so boring)

price to trubo mine 4g
genesis coupe 25g
mustang 23g

also new car would be manual.

I personally wouldn't bother with "hot rodding" an automatic '00 Eclipse.

What about meeting somewhere in the middle - selling it, buying something used, and having a little more disposable income for guns, ammo, beer, and maybe a few car parts.

You are in school where you should be learning how NOT to be a dumbass with your money. Finish school, use your student loans for their intended purpose, graduate, get a job, put some money in the bank, THEN think about spending money on your toys.

That way, when you are 50, you won't still be paying on student loan debt on something that is now a Chinese made fork.

I know your right. it surely is not what I want to hear though. Before I went back to school I was an electrician, now that the money has stopped coming in, the lack of financial freedom is killing me.

Eagle Talon TSi would come with a factory turbo, and it's a Mitsubishi. Sort of.

Finish your degree, then buy something really cool.
I know, I'm a party pooper, but you already know what you should be doing.
The lower you can keep your school debt, the better.
Just keep telling yourself that it's not your money, it's someone elses money and you're going to have to give it back.

Buy yourself something really cool, when you're done.

NEVER hotrod an auto import. It should be illegal ( probably is but not really enforced ) to have to listen to BAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUU as they shift gears...

Get something thats manual or do the conversion yourself and THEN turbo the shit out of it. Find someone who knows "megasquirt" real well in your area as its the only way to go for turbo EFI.

Dont be dumb.

its a 12 year old piece of shit, don't piss away $4000 to turbo a piece of shit. The fucking car probably isnt even worth $4000. You're in school, you need your money for other things. Be a fucking adult about this. drive that thing until it dies. Its not a sports car, Its not a serious driving machine, its a fucking front wheel drive japanese shitbox with an automatic. Its a gussied up rental car. Wait until you're wearing big boy pants and making real money and THEN buy a decent car.

Dont piss money away trying to polish a turd. Graduate, Get job, Buy lease-turn-in M3.

Sound advice in general, but you can have a little fun without digging yourself into too big of a hole. I wasn't "made of money" by any means in college (worked a couple co-op jobs making $12-16/hr), but I still played with a car a little ('98 Mustang GT then later an '03 Cobra). Living at home with my mom helped, but it wasn't a "free ride" by any means. I'm 28 now with no student loans and nothing financed except my house.

Don't turbo it. Accept the fact its for point a to point b and move on.

If you decide to ignore everyone's advice about not turboing prepare for a world of headaches.

PS. I have an STi and I just popped my motor. That's going to cost me a pretty penny to fix.

I don't want to sound harsh but maybe since you're going to school on student loans you may want to try making an adult choice here. You admit you can't afford to pay for this kiddie toy with your own money so you want to use student loan money to do it.

You may wish to consider getting out of school and employed and THEN when your paying your own bills, get whatever toy you want to rip up.

You can turbo your current ride, which offers a good chance of serious repair bills ( which you can't afford) or you can buy another car (which you can't afford) or you can leave well enough alone. Hey, I know. Let's REALLY have some fun. Turbo your current ride, throw a nice 300 shot of nitrous on it.

Don't use your student loans to buy a car unless yours is broken down and beyond repai. Seriously you don't want that shit following you any longer than necessary.

I worked two jobs during school to pay tuition out of pocket and not have loans. I also was paying on a $16k car I stupidly bought when I had a full time job. I still had to pay the insurance and upkeep on a German car on a students budget. This left little for beer and guns. Here I am 4 years later, no student loans and a decent job. The first thing I did was go out and replace my Audi and BMW with a new 2011 Nissan Frontier. There will be no more toy cars until I increase my salary by a sizeable bit. I play with bikes now. They are cheaper.

As for what you should do with your money; be stupid now and you'll regret it later.

If i was you, I'd just be glad you have transportation. Save, pay down loans. Make a Roth IRA. When you land that first real job, take a few months to survey the current offerings and pick one.

After racing Mitsubishi cars for 10 years I would sell it and never buy another one.

Dude, just sell it and buy an early 2000's corvette. You'll save yourself time and headache by buying a vehicle that has the power and "status" you want while at the same time not having a $600 a month payment like the Genesis will come with. Wait until after college for things like that.... ya know, after your other debts are paid. No sense in adding to the debt pile now. Honestly if i were you i'd stay right where i am until i was done with school, but if you're insistent on upgrading, i'd jump into a sligthtly older vette, or maybe something an impreza wrx.

ETA: this is coming from a guy that bought a Kia in college and paid it off. Now i've got some toys, and i didn't have to worry about shit tons of debt and interest that i built up by trying too fast to be a big boy. I've still got the kia for day to day shit, the other stuff is for... well

Using non bankrupt able debt to finance upgrades on an already low value depreciating asset?

Seriously?

If you don't have money you need to be driving the cheapest POS that will get you from point a to point b.

You shouldn't be bored during college even with a slow beater car. There is plenty of fun to be had.

Don't squander the time. You'll miss it very soon.

Lots of good advice here.

You are also due for your second timing belt (if it was never done the first time, we usually saw them go out at 105-115k) On the 4g series (your 4 cyl included) it was usually the balance shaft belt that broke first and trashed the timing belt and then the valves/head.

Take care of the decent car you have that gets good mileage and won't really break with proper maintenance. I'm finally back to school (at 29) driving a paid off 00 frontier, (sold my paid for 92 stealth twin turbo that put down around 360 AWHP/TQ) Working 50-60 hrs, going to school, and raising my boy. The only loan we have is on my wife's Xterra, and it is a very low payment that we have been doubling down on.

It will be nice when we are done, buy a nice house, and no other loans or cards to pay down.

If you are young and single, there is no way you should be buying anything extra on student loans, I wouldn't even finance my education that way.

Ill be honest - I think its a terrible idea for several reasons: the least of which being that trying to "soup up" a 3rd gen Grand Am Eclipse makes about as much sense as a screen door on a submarine.
By that point you've done every position you can do without requiring the assistance of some eyebolts and ballistic nylon webbing. There's a point at which enough is enough

There are only 4 engines worth modifying that were built after 1980 that are in cars that can be purchased for under $15,000

1. Buick SFI 3.8L V6 Turbo - GN, T-Type, TTA
2. Chevrolet/Pontiac LT1/LT4 - Corvette, Camaro Z28, Camaro SS, Trans Am, Formula, Firehawk, Impala SS
3. Chevrolet/Pontiac LS1/LS6/LS2 - Corvette, Camaro Z28, Camaro SS, Trans Am, Formula, Firehawk, GTO
4. Ford EFI 5.0L - Mustang LX and GT

Anything else and you're pissing money into the wind and will get your ass handed to you by a guy with one of the above who probably spent 1/2 of what you did yet makes double if not triple the power without power adders.
