No updates on this one, but now he has a younger brother to hang out with:

2000 4Runner SR5 v6 4wd w/ 5 speed, 129k miles.  From Boston.  First step is new tires and frame de-rusting, followed by Tundra brakes, followed by Tundra/LC coils with Tundra shocks and struts w/ diff drop.  Maybe some UCAs.  Custom rear bumper with swing away tire carrier sooner than later, and maybe a new front bumper at some point.  I've REALLY missed driving around in a Toyota.

Lets be clear, you are not likely to tow very much with a Cruiser after you mod it.  It needs every one of the about 200 hp to move it around.

And yes, they go everywhere nicely.

Okay, I'm reserving this spot...

I'm really getting the itch for an FJ80... I may have found one less than an hour away that's not stupid expensive. Keeping my fingers crossed.

What ever the question is, the answer is FJ80.

Does it have lockers?  Is it actually the FZJ80 (slightly better)?

Nope... It's the 3FE-motivated beast. The FZJ's I've looked at have either been beat to shit looking, or way more than I'm looking to spend on a (primarily) exploring/camping rig.

Heavy, durable & slow - like I'm getting to be.

I've been wanting an expedition-styled rig for damn near as long as I can remember - an 80 Series with an ARB bumper just begs to be driven where lesser built rigs fear to tread. I love our JK, but things like a distinct lack of enclosed storage capacity & a small tow-rating keep it from being the "Dream Expedition Rig." I've had XJ's, and seriously considered getting another (or a 4.0L ZJ), but at the end of the day - it'd be an aging unibody 4x4 that had been wheeled hard by a drunk teenager wearing a stars & bars ball cap (the fate of many XJ's), or driven into the ground by a succession of owners (Grand Cherokee.) I've even been tempted by visions of built LR Discoveries (series 1 or 2), but I honestly think it'd easier to just burn the cash than to fool with anything British.

Does the 3fe in the 80 Series have the same "killer galley plug" issue as the 60 and 62s? If so, I recommend addressing it soon.
As far as fuel economy goes, a 5spd/part time 4wd conversion, or engine swap are your only options. There was a guy that swapped an Atlas 5cyl into his 80. He claimed great improvements in economy, power and driveability.

Thanks for the heads up - I'll put that on my list of thing to check out when I start doing the PM stuff on the FJ80. I figure I'll need to spend some quality wrenching time to really get it ready for any sort of extended trips. Until then, I'm just putting around in it for fun. It's nice that I finally have a rig with enough room for the family - including the dogs.

After 20 years of being out of a Toyota 4x4 I finally picked up a used Limited 4runner last month and so far love it. Needs a few thing like shocks , but other than that I love it. Hope to keep it for the next 6 years or so.

How do you like the Supercharger?  Did you add any more fuel system parts or is it all Toyota?

Thanks for the offer on the parts

I'll definitely keep that in mind, next time I need some parts.

Been slacking all winter with zero motivation to do anything. Now that it's getting nice out, I need to wrap these in duratracs.

Beno is my boy! He is the "go to guy" if you need 60 Series parts, because he knows all the part numbers off the top of his head! Him and Cdan both will help out 'mud members with parts discounts and knowledge of all things Land Cruiser.
You could be the 4runner guru!

I like it ok, its only been on for 10k miles, so not sure if its worth the $3k to me.
Its all stock,  been looking at the urd kits and pulley's, or methanol injections, but I don't have any pinging issues or anything so I havn't looked too hard.  mostly looking to do headers I think if anything.

My 96 Limited 4Runner.  I bought it as a salvage vehicle from a front end wreck.  All that damage has been fixed.  Tundra Brake upgrade done. Converted from ADD to manual locking Tacoma hubs.  Redid all the ball joints, inner and outer tie rod ends, timing belt, interior, and half a millon other things.  Next up is lift and tires.

Took my FJ out on the "trails" around where I live. Good opportunity to check out my new Radflo 2.5" external Reservoir coilovers and LR UCAs.
All was good, no clunking, noise or anything, except for after about an hour and a half, I was getting a squeaky spring (I think) on the left front. Odd.

Very happy with the Radflo's it was a very comfortable ride, the trail surely wasn't. I am completely swaybar-less now...

I would say that as long as its still mechanically sound, and not giving you any trouble then its time to start the mods!

Less monthly payment means more money for parts and upgrades

I pieced my kit together over a couple years, always going to junkyards, checking classifieds.  had to buy the front springs and rear shocks new.  found the 5100 used with like 100 miles on them and used lc coils.
you need rear 92-95 4runner sway bar links for the rear
I used tundra links up front
bought the adjustable track bar from sonoransteel.  I asked them to draw a wizard on the box and this is what I got

The front springs are what I'm talking about, they aren't even showing up used online anymore.  The links will be no problem, and I can probably find the 5100's too.  I'm going to have to get it done soon, it's spring and time to get out in the National Forrest!!

Yeah. I'm now pretty set on just doing a 2.5" lift and being done with it but it was a tough decision whether or not to get KDSS because of the mod limitations. I'm very happy with it these days.

If you are only going 2.5", def go with the KDSS.  KDSS really only becomes a hindrance in lifting when you want to go bigger lift and 35"+ tires.

Heres my head turner.  2003 Tundra SR5 with the step side bed

People talk shit.  Ill admit its ugly. But I'm Happy it was so ugly no one wanted to buy it so I got it for a killer price.  Its a fun pickup to drive.  Sits a little low so I am going to give it a 1.5" Lift and when these tires are shot Im going to bump it back up to the 265's.  245's just don't handle dirt and gravel like my 265's.

I do miss my '97 4Runner.  When I am out of school Im going to pick up an older 4Runner with the 22r or 22re engine and do the solid front axel swap.

There's a guy doing a write up over on MUD about an LS swap IIRC. I know it's a "chebby" engine, but those things are tough to beat in "bang for your buck."

Plus, it'd shave more than a hundred pounds off your front end.

I'm glad someone does. I don't really like it, but it was the last one my city got from Toyota so I didn't have much of a choice. I guess it's slowly growing on me, but I'd rather it be just about any other color.

Honestly the best color for Toyota is muddy brown splatters.  Base color is immaterial.

Just drove up out of that valley behind me.  Been on dirt for about 3 hours, not counting getting unstuck out of a snow bank.

Any of you guys have experience with icon upper control arms? Mine are noisy as hell. Common thing?
