This 4Runner had a Marlin Crawler in it and a final ratio of something around 500:1.

It was behind my JK on Hopping Jalapeno during the Chile Challenge and was a very well prepared rig.

I'm searching for a 84/85 4Runner or pickup for next years event.

I'm looking hard at tacomas, but will probably buy used. New ones are a little steep for my price range.

Thats it. The TRD's are nice but I saved about $5k buying a base model with a few upgrades.
Used 4WD Tacomas are rare around here. I was under a time crunch and didn't have much time to wait around for one.
I like the truck but it gets pretty crappy mileage and I just had to have the AC compressor replaced, I've only had the truck for five months.

Yeah, I'm torn about them. I spoke with someone at a large GM dealer, and I can get a new 2012 Ext cab LT 1/2 ton for mid-high 20's (with my USAA discount and the other rebates, etc). But the little Toyota demon in my head keeps whispering about reliability and resale value.

The wheels were silver but I painted them this week since I won't have money for wheels and tires for a while. Everything else came as is. I got the base model because I like the way it looked better.

You guys with newer Tacomas can you tell me what your RPM"S are at around 65-70mph? Mine stays at 3000, I think thats a little high. It's acting like it doesn't want to shift out of 4th.

Thank you. Looks like I'm heading back to the dealership. I'm idling at 1000, by 45mph it's staying at 2000 and by 60mph it's staying at 3000. It shifts up to fourth then nothing. No shifting to 5th and no down shifting. When I slow down you can watch the gauge jump up and down until I have come to a stop.

I like those wheels.

I have an 07 Prerunner that needs something other than it's stock wheels.   I'm thinking of these TRD series as well though.

I already did an instrument panel illumination change.  White needles against blue instrumentation.   Looks so damn much better than the stupid red/red that tears my eyes a new one at night.    Was an easy 1-2 hour job with a soldering iron and some colored LEDs.    Takes awhile due to their tiny size.

I'm just wondering if the overdrive lockout was engaged.  On my '01 there was a button on the side of the shifter.

Yeah it was all my fault. After having a rental car for over a week I got use to how the shifter worked. When I got my truck back I was shifting just like I did the rental and was putting it into 4th instead of Drive. Luckily I figured out the probem before I went to the shop. Though it was my fault for not paying attention I have to say the way Toyota designed the shifter is pretty dumb, D and 4 are side by side and it only takes a small bump with your hand to knock it into 4th.

On a more postive note I hit 10k miles today. 10k in five months is a lot of driving.

Handles like someone nailed it to the ground. Incredibly quick and stable in turns. Feels faster than the number sheet might have you expect, even with me keeping it under 4k RPMs (break-in). Awesome front seats.

I'd recommend test driving one if you're at all interested. Most Toyota dealers should have one on the lot right now. If you get an auto to test, put it in sport mode. Makes a huge difference in the way it handles shifting and responds intelligently to aggressive driving (rev matches downshifts, downshifts into turns, etc).

I pick this up tomorrow.

It will be the base rig for my rock crawler project for next years Chile Challenge and I'll probably take it to Moab later.

The tranny is toast, but I'll swap in a 5 speed to replace the four that's in it.

No rust, rough interior and needs new exhaust, kind of where I expected it to be mechanically.

It has 17 inch rims on 305s and 6 inch lift.

I may sell those and go with 15 inch steelies on 33's.

These are were my other early 80 trucks, which I completely regret selling:

Trekker:

I bought this for $1200 in 1991 when I had very little money, replaced the destroyed 4 speed with a 5 speed and drove it all over New Mexico and West Texas for a few years.

I rattle canned it with OD paint I bought at the exchange for $1 a can ($12 paint job) :
