Not as uncommon as you might think... in my time working with SF teams in the Stan I met a guy that was working with a missionary group that rescues child-trafficking victims. He joined up, and made it to SF for the specific intent of gaining the necessary skills to carry out effective hostage rescue against heavily armed traffickers. He was one of the most genuinely nice guys I've ever met (most of them are but this guy stood out).
