HUGE part of Indian culture is to keep much of the family wealth in gold jewelry.  Mosly 23 Karat bangles and the like.

My wife is from the Indian ocean (she is not Indian but they share some cultural habits) and loves her gold.

I suspect the effort to clamp down on gold sales there will be a mistake.

The restriction is just another form of financial repression.  They are trying to keep the Indians from dumping their rupees for gold.  So, the undaunted Indians are picking up silver instead.
