I've had this happen a couple times over the past six years or so with my Master Card through USAA. Most recently someone charged over $100 on iTunes.
USAA took care of me both times. |

Yup, love AMEX, they found it suspicious that I was staying at a hotel in DC & Rome simultaneously last weekend.

Haha well I got my new card and activated it and checked my activity online ...
one of the fraudulent charges went through and they transferred it over to the new card
I can't figure out how to get a real person on the phone so I just submitted a dispute on the charge online. I'm sure they'll get it straightened out. Hopefully they don't misunderstand it and think my new card was stolen and cancel it again |

My wife and I have had this happen 3 times with one of our cards and every single time it's been painless. One time they charged $7,000 before they called us. My favorite is when the thief bought a one year subscription from some company for "online identity theft protection".
Every time we've had this happen the CC company has gone over the charges line by line and said, "Is this your charge?" and I answer truthfully. But if someone wanted to be dishonest it would be so easy. When I've said "no I don't know what that is", they say ok and take it off. I'm just an honest person I guess. |

Same here, 3 times on the same BoA card over the course of 5yr and they take care of it no problem. Same process that you describe. One time they made a $10 donation to the red cross. Sorry red cross ![]() |

I've both investigated these crimes and been victim several times, with both debit and credit cards. Each time the company holding the card was very easy to deal with and promptly "investigated" my disputed charges and it ended favorably. The problem is the lack of "investigating" the company does.
They do not cooperate with LE much and it's mostly handled in the company fraud dept, where the vendor usually ends up with the short end of the stick if anything was actually shipped or downloaded, which raises the price for us all. Banks do not staff fraud dept's with enough staff to deal with the enormous amount of fraud and like many things, only the big fish get looked at and the everyday 1- 1000 dollar charge case is thrown in the trash. After having dealt with banks on this several times they are making their own bed by failing to provide LE with info, and the companies taking the orders don't do much cooperating either. I expect it to get a lot worse through time. I guess the CC companies simply consider it the cost of doing business and if they do actually suffer a loss (they often don't) they write it off. |

A guy I knew had the same thing happen to him even after changing cards, turned out an employee at a restaurant he frequented for lunch was taking cell phone pics of customers CCs and using them online. If it keeps happening to you I'd check where you're going - just a tip
