Not trying to be smart or anything but arent you guys supposed to be issued the "choco chip" BDUs when in the dessert? I have noticed in a lot of the deployment pics here and in other threads that you Army guys are using this cammo pattern, no offence but your guys are really sticking out from sand. Is because there clean/newly issued and have not yet been broke in the reason why they dont hide you guys well?

Been wanting to ask this question for a long time now... thanks

every soldier that I know of is issued and wears the acu uniform present day in iraq and afghan, I don't know about special ops though. Unfortunately you are correct, they don't really conceal soldiers in the desert much at all, personally, in my opinion the army simply got this 1 wrong. It's not the digital pattern though it's the colors. The patterrn is effective with colors that go with the environment.

Thanks for clarifying that up... hope you guys get some correct camo soon... stay safe

That was you?!?  I was listening to that battle over the radio when my CLP stopped off at LSA Anaconda.  It was like listening to a ball game, but hoping you guys were OK.  I remember it was 20 MAR 05, because the next day one of my LMTVs broke down south of FOB Brassfield Mora (3-69 AR).

There as another big battle 22 MAR 05, involving 3-69 AR at Lake Tharthar, west of Samarra.  Elements from 3-69 were involved in an attack on terrorist camps at the lake, and they needed help.  3-69 AR gave an order for every single gun-truck on the FOB to report to the TOC.  So my 4 gun platforms went, but they ended up not needing us.

BTW, I've been on Bismark at Salman Pak to Detroit.  NASTY area.  Back then, Bismark was reknowned for utterly being littered with IEDs.  More so than any other route.

ACK!  My bad.  I thought Salman Pak was on route Bismarck.  We got on Bismarck from ASR Fontana, then went north on Bismarck and made a sharp right turn onto Detroit at Salman Al Juburi.

Salman Pak is (was) on Route Bismark. The ambush that I was referring to was between the IP checkpoint on Bismark and the right turn onto Detroit. Some maps that I've seen showed "ASR Detroit" starting before the turn. We always considered the start of Detroit as that turn though (and that is the way our maps were marked). The ambush wasn't actually in the town...it was out on the road near the large power plant. Salman Pak was the closest village of any size that we knew of so that's how we refer to it.

I've never heard of Salman Al Juburi...but then we often didn't know the names of the small towns we were passing by. Our maps were computer generated and really kind of sucked.

Yeah, I just looked on my old GAC slides.  The map on the slide had "Salman Al Juburi," written exactly where that right-turn was.

In any case, I'm glad you made it out OK!

I actually miss being on the retrans site.  There was a village about 500Yrd nw of us that the SF guys would always come in at midnight, do there thing and leave.  Not to mention putting hundreds of rounds down range.

Like the others, I thank you for all you do. I love seeing the pictures of the environment and getting the opportunity to see it through your eyes rather than what the MSM wants me to see. I think seeing you with the locals is the best. Seems to be a lot of good will.

My unit built the float bridge there, I think your SGM and COL came out to talk to us about it, and about a few of the guys that were lost in that area. I was the crazy son-a-bitch that drove the dozer back from the bridge site. I have some pics and will post them soon.

Can us zoomies play too?

First deployment back in 06:

Crew shot, me on the far left.

KC-10 v KC-10 over Iraq.

Random blown up bridge.

There is a good story to this next one.  Guy shows up, starts being an ass in the dorm.  He slams doors, leaves lights on (big gap under the door lets a lot in when you want to sleep), blows off a captain when he's confronted, (guy in question is an E6), and is an overall douche.  Then, he leaves this letter in the bathroom.  Hijinks ensue. He gets pissed after all the other things show up and, a week or so later, photocopies of it start appearing around the base and in planes his crew is going to fly.  Heard that he blew his top a few times after I went home.  I'll still chuckle about it when I think about it.

Huge pic here

One of our pilots with Hadji, the Golden Wonder Camel

Photos from 2008:

Dragging A-10's into the AOR. (Slow, looooonnnng flights)

Dented up nose on one of the hogs.  (I fucking hate refueling these things)

And from the other end of the boom.  A lot of the time, they try to fly into the boom instead of letting the boom operator (me) do his/her job which ends up leading to dents.

And one from 2008's deployment.  Best KC-10 picture EVAR.
