I know from experience that I would prefer someone asking me what I need rather than getting a care package of stuff that I don't. That being said, here's my advice, fwiw.
Scratch the Vortex flashider. If he aint SF, Ranger, etc, messing with his weapon won't fly. In case you haven't seen the 17 different posts, apparently P Mags are no longer authorized in the Army. I've never had an issue with newish issued aluminum mags unless they were damaged. Last time I checked (and this could have changed), technically you shouldn't be mailing mags over there anyways. I would recommend a 2 point sling that can be converted into a single point sling. If you don't have the webbing, tri-glides and fastex buckles to make one, go with a Spec Ops brand sling and their Wolf Hook. I use this so I can run it as a single point when mounted, or for MOUT. Then for dismounted, or just carrying it around the FOB/COP I have a 2 point. Get him a bore snake in whatever caliber his weapon is. Then get one for the rest of the caliber weapons in his platoon if you want to be a nice guy. They save a lot of time. I like Hoppe's Elite solvent in the pump spray bottle. I haven't had one leak yet. It's great for cleaning the star chamber and lower receiver. http://www.hoppes.com/products/elite_gun_cleaner.html If he doesn't have one yet, the Otis cleaning kits are convenient. As well as a good multi tool. They're usually issued one but if he got to the unit right before deployment, he might have missed out. I recommend the Leatherman Core because the tools (ie screwdriver tips) are longer than on a Gerber which makes it more versatile. Good eyepro is also something to think about. I don't wear the issued crap. It doesn't fit my freakishly shaped head so it gives me headaches. I only wear Oakleys. I know they're expensive but they are well worth it to me. I have the clear and dark lenses for the M frames. |

The flash suppressor of choice would be the Smith Vortex but depending on his job his command may go bat shit crazy to any alteration to the mil weapon. Slings no problem they dont look at that the same way. If he smokes - smokeless tobacco chew or dip. There have been more than a few who have lit a cigarett and become a target for the snipers. Coolmax socks or really high quality hiking socks - foot care is very important. A&D diaper rash cream, And you will get some joy out of this one as will the guys he opens it around - the individual Always feminine wipe pre moistened like baby wipes but in individual packages. (there is nothing quite as funny as sending a bad ass a box of maxi pads - the shear joy his comrads get is well worth pain he suffers) throw in an unopened pack of baseball cards and look for things in the store that are new products that were not previously available when he left. Anything to remind him of home or a distraction like a sling shot or dominoes etc. He should have gun gear but throw in some cleaning supplies, if you want to afford it a solar battery charger and rechargable batteries. A small multi band radio could also be useful to pick up BBC news. American toilet paper - if they are in the field the TP in the MRE's leaves something to be desired. Immodium, Advil. There is a little teapot looking thing called a Netti pot that can be used to flush out your sinus - google it - this can knock the dust out and give a lot of relief. flavored coffee, just figure it out by what stuff you use during the week and picture yourself with none of it just mountains rocks MRE's Guns some ammo usually the wrong caliber and a lot of heavy crap to carry. There is a lot we take for granted like having a pillow and blanket and once you get past the basics you can get a five gallon bucket and lid from Menards and pack the stuff in that and tape it up. The bucket will be used as a washing machine, chair, means to carry items way to protect items in the bottom of the ruck sack from getting broken. He will soon be begging for another bucket. Pack heavy stuff in the flat rate mailing boxes from the post office and light stuff like chips in the bucket so that he gets chips not chip dust upon arrival. Pick up the Customs form at the post office before hand to have it filled out.

30 rounds, 2 point that can be converted to 1 point (several are out there).
But other than that, others have already commented |

the only real mods i made to my rifle was to add a BCM charging handle and a magpul BAD lever, i made a sling out of some random webbing i found and 550 cord. but i do love the spec ops brand slings.
the one thing i would have loved to get sent to me was a surefire weaponlight (we didnt get em issued) i scored one later on in the tour but if you send him an X300. its easy on easy off and he can use it on anything or as a standalone but thats a bit ghetto. |

What does he need weapon wise? Thanks for your service ad stay safe !! Not to rain on your parade here, but what is his job? If he's doing combat patrol stuff then sure, rock on with the weapons stuff. If he's living FOBulously then he really doesn't need that stuff and he may be better off with something else. That said, when I was in Afghanistan, I loved getting stuff like Campbells Soup cups, Ramen, easy mac, stuff like that since we only had Afghan food or MRE's. Weapons stuff, I'll agree with the X300, I ran on one my M4 and SAW and it was great, ensure it's LED. Don't screw around with batteries, you can't ship them first of all, and second they should have plenty of CR-123's. Actually I take that back, we always needed AAA batteries for our head lamps. If he doesn't have one, get him a decent LED head lamp, don't go crazy with the Surefire one (unless you've got money to burn, then go nuts) just a 25 dollar Petzl will suffice. |

If hes a grunt and doesnt have a good two point quick adjust sling get him a VTAC.
He should be provided a light and at least a PEQ-2 with his weapon so dont worry about that. Bore snake. Dont send any weapon parts they are all ITAR regulated and you would get yourself in trouble if caught. I think even magpul followers for regular magazines are ITAR controlled. ETA: I second the Headlamp if he doesnt have one and the AAA batteries for it. |

LOL, PMAGs are still authorized.
Link: TACOM can go choke on hard cock However, you might have a rough time shipping magazines overseas. Some make it, some don't... and they will have to connex-load or hand carry them back 'cause ya can't mail 'em back to the U.S. |

Dont count on it making it through customs. I had a couple of HK mags sent over with a care package, and when it got here the box had been cut open and mags removed. They never got sent home either

VTAC sling, headlamp.. ditto on the mags, not worth the risk of customs taking them. What kind of rifle is he carrying? 100 round M249 pouches, if you can find them and thats what he has

All other postal services do not work. DHL is expensive by the way. No Armor or gear like Scopes, Magazines can be sent to Theatre. Mail system recently cracked down on sending battery operated devices like laptops and such are no longer allowed to be mailed! TO THE OP- SEND FOOD AND SOCKS (2 most liked items) Forget about the Gun gear. Also if you specify what he/she does we can be more specific on good ideas. Fobbits dont need the same things the guys outside the wire need. |

CT Guard 143rd MP company is on their way to a bad place there, I'm sure they would appreciate the support from someone local. |

Just send him some Break Free CLP, and an AP brush, food that doesnt have to be cooked or warmed up, and for the love of god...NO SUNSCREEN. We had a metric shit ton of sun screen when I was in Iraq...like it's some vacation and all we do is sun bathe..
