I'd use dd from a live-usb or live-dvd linux boot. Will positively sector-clone any drive, and you have the ability to buy identical replacement drives.

"sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb" (for example)

that's certainly possible, but it's not user friendly at all.

If you are looking for a free option that has a GUI, look at Access Data's "FTK Imager Lite version 3.1.1."  The program can run from a USB thumb drive. Select make disk image, choose the raw (dd) format, select the target drive and the destination drive and let it run.

You can download a copy of the program from their website http://www.accessdata.com/product-download. You have to fill out a contact form but I would unsubscribe from the emails after you download it.

Why not some sort of Backup/DR system for all 30 workstations?  Are they air-gapped?

Yes, air gapped. Plus we have a mix of proprietary DOS systems, windows for work groups & win95 operating systems.

Check out Gandalf PE. Its a newer flavor of BART.
Make it into a bootable CD or USB stick and you can do most things you want with it - including saving disk images to a network share.

That looks promising! No cables to lose or get misplaced by technicians.
