Sorry if this is a very basic question...

Recently, Outlook (2016) started showing messages as "read" if I had previously opened them in web based GMail.  

Is there a way to turn this off?

You have it setup as imap. If you switch to pop it will just download the messages and will not know if they were opened elsewhere.
